? abt toddler beds-help....

I'm going to have to put Landry and Hudson in big beds soon.  We put Emerson in a twin bed at two but, I don't want to spend the big bucks on twin/queen beds until we move back to Texas in a year or two.  So, I am thinking about toddler beds.

What's the max age you would leave a LO in a toddler bed AND does a crib quilt fit on the toddler bed as the bed spread?  I'm wanting to fold something at the bottom of the bed with a cute sheet and some pillows but, a down comforter would be to big.  What "bedding" do you use on a toddler bed?

  • I think there's usually a weight limit for each toddler bed, so you'd have to judge by that. Also, I know just before age 3, my niece quit sleeping in her toddler bed and started sleeping on the floor, so my sister got her a full-size bed for her 3rd birthday. I suspect that would vary by child, so who knows. But if you have 4yos who are happy to sleep in toddler beds and under the weight limit, I don't think it's a problem.

We just use the sheets we used on his crib. He's a "hot" sleeper (always warm and sweaty) so he sleeps with an aden & anais swaddle blanket. His bed is a converted crib, so it's like a day bed. We don't use a bed spread. I believe they sell toddler bedding sets, though, wherever they have toddler beds for sale. I'm not sure the crib blanket would be the right size, but I'm sure you could test it out at BRU.

  • I think how long you can keep a child in a toddler bed depends on the child.  My DD did not do well in the toddler bed.  She needed more space - when she outgrew the crib at 29 mos, she had outgrown the size so the toddler bed having the same mattress just wasn't big enough for her.  DS is being moved today to a twin; he was in a toddler bed for about 6 or 7 mos (his crib converts; if it hadn't, we would've gone straight to a twin bed).  Now, that said...my friend had her DD in a toddler bed until she was 4!

I did use the crib quilt for a blanket for both DD and DS in their toddler beds.  It doesn't fold down the sides, but does cover the top of the mattress and it worked well enough.  I did purchase toddler sheets from Target that fit the crib mattress (really soft jersey material) because the set had a fitted sheet AND a top sheet.  He likes being covered and it is too hot for a blanket right now, so having a top sheet was great.  Those sets were in the aisle where they sell the kid bedding, not the baby section.

Planning ahead, I did purchase a blanket for him.  Not sure of the size, it's one of those kid microfleece blankets.  It's big for a toddler bed, but it was fine to fold up on the end of his bed.  For a pillow, I recently bought him a travel pillow from Bed Bath & Beyond.  Came with a cute pillowcase to fit and it was the perfect size for his toddler bed and his head!

  • We've never used a toddler bed. By the time my children were 2, they were too big to sleep comfortably on that small mattress. It probably depends on the child though.

  • My kid is kind of tiny, so he could probably stay in a toddler bed for a while. He doesn't really have bedding. There is a sheet on his bed, he has a pillow with a case, and then he usually sleeps with his one blankie that he is attached to. He usually runs pretty warm though, so he doesn't really need a blanket or other bedding.
