If your child receives OT at a private clinic for SPD...

I'm wondering what the clinic itself is like.  DS has received OT at a private clinic for the past year.  It is a fantastic place and we love his therapist and the setting.  The sensory gym is to die for and the entire place is well laid out, neat, organized, etc.  There are usually only 2 kids in the gym at a time, maximum.

DS starts school in the fall so we will not be able to drive the hour each way to this practice.  I went to check out a place yesterday, DS had a one hour free trial.  I thought the therapist was decent but the facility was small, cramped, piles of toys everywhere, many kids in the same small space swinging into each other and falling on top of each other.  The small therapy rooms were crammed to the gills and nothing was organized.  My easily distracted sensory seeker was all over the place.  The therapist commented on his lack of attention span and all I could think of was, "who could concentrate in the middle of this chaos?"

My first thought is that this was not the place for us.  But my second thought is that maybe they were trying to make it more "real life" and remove DS from his comfort zone.

So what is your therapy space like?

  • My LO gets therapy in out children's hospital.  He is one on one with his therapist with no other kids. It's very organized, everything in it's place, all drawers and cabinets labeled with what's in them.  It's great. I don't know of any SPD "clinics" in AZ.  I would say stick to your feelings.  If it doesn't seem right then it's isn't. If you don't mind me asking, where did you find these "SPD clinics".

DS just started OT at a local Children's Hospital therapy care center.  They just opened a new facility a few weeks ago.  It's more like the first place you described.  I haven't seen more than one other kid in the larger gym.  Usually it's just him.  When he's been in a smaller gym it's definitely been just him.  So far it's been one on one with an interning (I'm not sure the exact term for the field-she's at the last step before she can see patients on her own) therapist while the supervising therapist describes and explains to me what is going on.  Starting next week it will be just him and his therapist since her the internship is ending.

I don't think my DS would do well in a chaotic environment.  He's already somewhat difficult to keep on task with all the stimulating toys and different activities in the gyms.
