Adoption

newbie question: Can you request multiples? Does that ever happen?

Hi,

New to the adoption board and looking for info. Not with an agency yet.. I am a twin myself and they run in my family so naturally I would like to have them ( or multiples!) Is it unheard of to request multiples? Don't get me wrong, any child would be welcome and wanted but in my research so far I have not found any information about this .  Does it happen often? Does anyone have insight? Just looking for some responses thanks!

Re: newbie question: Can you request multiples? Does that ever happen?

  • I don't know the stats on how often multiples are placed for adoption, but our agency at least has a caveat in their fee structure relating to what happens if you adopt multiples, so it must happen sometimes!

I'm guessing you would have to let your social worker know that you're interested in having your profile shown to expectant mothers who are expecting twins+, but other than that, I don't know that you'd be able to "request" them, per se, especially if those are the only types of placements you were willing to look at.  Any restrictions you place on the type of situation you are open to can increase the amount of time you are waiting for an adoptive placement.

  • I have noted that we're open to twins on our application, and our agency fees for twins are 1.5x the fees for a singleton adoption.  Seems like you might be in for a looong wait if you specify you prefer twins.

  • Thanks for the replies ladies. I am definetly not just open to twins or multiples. I think our attitude is more any placement but if it happened to be twins that would great too...if that makes sense?
  • We worked with several agencies and facilitators.  It seemed to be a common question... are you open to twins?  Triplets?

I don't think people "request" them... it's more a question of you being open or not to them.

  • Yes, you can say you're open to adopting twins or more. Whoever you work with can tell you how often they place them. We were open to them but adopted a singleton.
  • Our agency once said that they placed maybe one set of twins per year. I am guessing that twins are a rarity, they would be even more rare in an adoption situation.

This, in our work with agencies, we were asked what we were open to in terms of multiples.

  • havent been back in a few days but just dropped back in to say THANKS for all the replies!
