Special Needs

Intro

Hi everyone!  I have a stepson who is 10 and is special needs.  I have been involved in his life since he was 7.  I am currently pregnant with my first child.    My stepson, Trent, has a genetic disorder not specified.   He is developmentally delayed and has problems with his fine motor coordination, his metabolism and his eyesight.   When he was little, he did not reach the milestones of a normal baby and toddler:  not rolling over, talking or walking.

He currently has an IEP but is in a normal classroom at school.   He is a smart child, but immature for his age.   He also has problems hand writing because of the fine motor coordination.   The fine motor coordination also effects his walking, running, climbing up and down stairs and balancing.   This is exaberating by his low vision which is 20/100 corrected in his right eye and 20/40 corrected in his left eye.  He also has to be on a special diet because of his slow metabolism and because he is not as active as other kids his age.  He has problems making friends at school because of his immaturity and his inability to participate with them at recess.  He often cries in class if he is frustrated by a problem or issue.

There are many sports activies in my area for special needs kids.  I would like to get him involved in these activities so he can meet and connect with children who are similar to him.  However, my husband is resistent to this because he thinks Trent is challenged by being in "normal" activties.  I also think that because I am the stepmother what I think doesn't have as much weight.

 Does anyone have any suggestions?
