Preemies

For those with LOs on reflux meds

We went to the pedi today for Lila's 2 month check up. She was 4lbs exactly today! Her pedi decided it is time to try meds since she is now showing discomfort with her feedings. He prescribed her zantac, as many of you indicated you have used as well. She is supposed to take it 3 times a day. My question for those of you with LOs on reflux meds is whether you give it to them with their feeding or at a different time? I gave her first dose to her with one of her feedings but she spit up quite a bit immediately after finishing her bottle so I am wondering if it even stayed in her. She usually will spit up right after eating, sometimes it is just a little but sometimes it is a lot, so I want to try and make sure she is actually getting her medicine if I can. Thanks in advance!

Re: For those with LOs on reflux meds

  • My DS is on different reflux meds but I was told you should not give them anything to eat for 30mins after giving it to them. Maybe you can try that. Not 100% sure if your DD meds would be the same or not. Figured it might be worth a try though. Hope things improve. Good Luck!

Ok thank you! I will do it at different times then. I asked the pedi a million questions today, unfortunately I forgot to ask that one!

  • My LO handles them better if it is between a feeding. It might just work that way because he has a G tube instead of eating orally. And it works best if I give them to him exactly every 8 hours instead of just 3 random times a day. Hope that helps!

It doesn't matter with zantac (in regards to time).  It is true that for PPIs (Prevacid, Prilosec, Nexium, etc) they should be given 30 minutes before a meal, but not with H2 blockers, which is what Zantac is.

Adalyn gets it twice a day and I try to space it out as close to every 12 hours as possible.  In the morning I just mix about 5ml of breastmilk with the zantac, her multivitamin with iron, and her vitamin D.  For her evening dose I usually just squirt it in her mouth with the oral syringe I get from the pharmacy.

Also, since it is liquid, it is usually absorbed and past the stomach about 15 minutes or so after you get it.  So, if she doesn't spit up before that time, it's usually a safe bet that she got most, if not all, of the dose.

GL and remember that it might take a week or 2 before you see the effect of the zantac.  However, we noticed a difference in Adalyn in less than a week. Let us know how she does.

  • My little one was just started on Zantac on Monday.  The first few doses she took perfectly just given via syringe, with a puckered, bitter face of course.  Now unfortunately she's learned to spit it out.  So in regards to time, I give it every 12, around 8am and 8pm with a feed.  I feed her almost all of her bottle and leave about 10mls and add the medicine to it for her to finish.  She hasn't spit that out yet!  If by chance it's not time for a feed, I just give her Zantac in the 10ml.

  • DS is actually still on Zantac (13 mos)... Though tying to seem him off.  He'd get it 2x a day, with morning and night bottle - never had a problem!
