Hi there,
My daycare is suggesting I put my DD in shoes since she's been pulling herself up and cruising around. She's pretty strong and will squat up and down at daycare and cruise. So far I have her in socks and its making it slipper for her to walk in them but I dont want her little feet to be cold. I did notice some babies had these soft leather shoes on and I'm wondering if you have used them? I spoke to the pedi a month ago and they said to keep her out of shoes until she is walking on her own but at the time i didnt ask about the soft leather sock like shoes.
Any advice or suggestions?
Thanks so much!
Re: when did you put shoes on your DC?
I started putting soft leather shoes (like Robeez) on DS when he was almost 6 months old. The soft shoes keep his socks on and I hope they will keep his feet warmer on the chilly days. The shoes are a PITA to put on DS, but I think they are cute and they keep the daycare providers from hunting down missing socks.
I think babies are supposed to be able to feel the ground as they learn to walk, so I think you are supposed to avoid hard-soled shoes.
i tried to keep dd barefoot as long as possible, even when cruising so her feet can feel textures, etc. my pedi also recommended it. i don't know if it had anything to do w/ it, but dd started walking at 9 mos. we live in california, so weather wasn't a concern. when we did put shoes on her, we started w/ robeez, then pedipeds, and now she's in stride rites.
It is best for them not to wear shoes when they are learning to walk but because it is cold, I would try socks with rubber on the bottom or like you said soft leather shoes. We got a pair of Pedipeds for DS and I loved them. The quality of those shoes is great and they are super cute. Once he was better at walking, we got him firmer shoes.
We started putting Robeez on dd today. She is cruising around at day care, and they are starting to put them outside so they asked for her to be in shoes. We went to Stride Rite, and even they said that it is best to keep them out of hard soled shoes. Of course they had soft bottom shoes, but for the month that dd will be cruising, I wasn't planning on spending $30.
You can check out Marshall's to see if they have any Robeez. They sometimes have them for a lot less than anywhere else. The Target one's are pretty good too.
We put Mia in Robeez last winter when our nanny share was at the other family's house, to make sure her feet didn't get cold. So that was from roughly 6 to 12 months of age. Robeez have very thin soles and are the next best thing to barefoot.
She was barefoot most of the summer (still is, actually -- it's still in the high 70s/low 80s in Texas), but we did buy her a pair of hard soled sandals once she was walking well.
She has a couple of pairs of hard soled shoes now, but I'm thinking of getting her another pair of Robeez to keep her feet warm when she's inside.
Amazon almost always has a sale running on certain Robeez styles.
Mommy to DD1 (June 2007), DS (January 2010), DD2 (July 2012), and The Next One (EDD 3/31/2015)
since it was summer, when he started cruising we still had him in bare feet or socks, but when he started walking on his own we put him in soft shoes everyday for daycare. I bought the cheaper version of Robeez at target. Pedipeds makes great ones as well. He switched to hard shoes at about 16 months.
When we were ready for real shoes daycare recommended shoes with a very soft sole - basically, if you could bend them in half, those were good shoes to start with. Hard sole shoes are more clunky and difficult to figure out on their feet.
My son also wears Robeez to daycare and around the house when it seems a bit chilly. My PT friend recommended that for him in learning to walk to be barefoot (no socks) at least half the time. She also said the same thing about no hard soled shoes.
Good luck!
