1st Trimester

Irregular Gestational Sac

I had to go in for an ultrasound to rule out an ectopic on Tuesday. The good news is, not ectopic. The bad news was that the sac was empty (which I posted about below), though I was starting to feel ok about that because I think my levels just weren't high enough to see anything else. However, I emailed my dr to ask her for her interpretation of results (she was at her other location that) and she said she is still concerned because my sac is slightly irregular. She said it could be nothing and everything could develop fine, but it can also be a sign of a problem. Combined with my low progesterone levels and light spotting she finds it to be cause for concern. I have a followup ultrasound in the morning (I haven't spotted in 2 days, so I'm trying to remain hopeful!). Has anyone experienced this? I'd like to hear outcomes either way.

  • It's my understanding that a sac can still be seen sometimes in the case of ectopic, kind of a "pseudo sac" in utero while the products of conception are actually elsewhere. I've had two ectopics this last year and had read up  a lot on it. Once you see the yolk sac and definitely the fetal pole you know it's definitely intrauterine. Pay attention for abdominal pain, especially unilateral. One of my ectopics ruptured and had me going to emergency surgery.

I am in the same situation as you.  I went in for 3 u/s (I'm a little over 6w) and each time the sac was empty.  After blood work came back my progestone levels were low and was given a suppository cream to try to get it to increase.  I did have some bleeding and cramping about 2 w ago but nothing since.  I'm waiting to hear back from the doctor's office regarding if my hcg levels have increased.  Is this not the most stressful thing ever?  I'm in a serious funk!

  • When I had my first u/s they told me I should be 7 weeks.  Well we measured 6 weeks and the doctor told me that we too had an irregular shape sac.  We did get to see our LO in there with her little heart beating. We were told to come back in 7-10 days. We went back 9 day later, baby girl had caught up in her growth &&& the sac looked great.  We are now 19 weeks and had a great a/s last week! Keep your chin up & remember today I'm pregnant and I love my baby.  Thoughts and prayers for you and your SO.
