Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

How do you organize grown out of clothes (if you are saving them)...

DS is 15 months and all the clothes he has outgrown is in bins the bottom of his closet...I'd like to recapture this space.  We're also expecting in a few months and not finding out the sex.  Should I organize by size or size/ or neutral/boy?  I've tried by neutral/boy, but then end up putting stuff lke navy sweatpants in neutral....will I really put these on a girl...I have seen navy for a girl, but with a boy on them.....now I'm just ranting..

Re: How do you organize grown out of clothes (if you are saving them)...

  • I'm not the most help b/c I only have a 10 month old but I have been organizing the clothes my daughter is out growing.  We didn't find out the sex before hand so I have some unisex clothes.  So the really small NB/0-3 and things like sleep sacks are together and mostly unisex.  Then I have winter clothes in one box and will put all the summer clothes together.  I thought it was a little easier to sort by season than by size (which would be close to the same).  Also I have dressed my girl in greens, yellows and light blues that are probably boy clothes and most of her pajamas are boy since I got them from my sister-in-law as a hand-me-down from her son.

In terms of wondering if you will really use boy clothes on a girl.  Just have it organized so if you realize you don't have enough sweats you can just go pull out a few pairs instead of having to go shopping.

  • I'd organize by size (and not size on the label but when they actually fit your LO). And then if you have a girl, open up the 0-3 bin and take out what you'll actually use for a girl and donate the rest. FWIW DD wears navy sweats all the time.

This is what I've been doing.  Everytime it's time to change sizes I just take everything out of his closet/drawers that he's almost out of and replace it with the next size, and pack away the old.

  • I just did it by size in boxes and labeled the season as well.  I would rec the same for you.  If you have a girl, you could always go back through and dig out the neutral stuff.  Or you could leave the neutral stuff on top for easy access as needed.

Our stuff is just in boxes.  To take up less space, you could try those space saver bags?  Or put it in actual rubbermaid bins in the attic.

  • We are team green again so I have some neutral newborn stuff, which I kept separate/accessible.  If we have another boy, I won't have to reorganize at all.  If it's a girl, I'll go through later and pull anything she can use (which probably won't be much).  For now, it's done by size and item (ie 9 month pants).  I bought over-sized ziplocks (2-gallon mostly but there are even bigger ones available).  I did end up putting it all back into the bins so I'm still stuck with those but I like that I can find things now instead of having to dig.

  • I put DS' in bins as well; I've considered space saver bags but the bins work well for now.  I always have an open bin out put things in as he outgrows them, then I label with the sizes when it's full.

I put all the boy and neutral things together.  Our LO on the way is a girl, so I think I'll go through his clothes from newborn until 3 months, and pull out the neutral.  After that, I don't think he really had enough neutral things for me to bother.

  • Everything is put into sized labeled bins and put in the garage. I have a CD bin, then clothing bins labeled NB-3 mo, 3-6 mo, 6-9 mo, etc.
  • We bought the huge rubbermaid bins and organized by size. We have them stacked in our basement. We decided to keep everything for future kids and it just seemed easier to put them in by size.

  • I have one bin of g/n clothes, all sizes.  The rest of the clothes are in bins according to sizes.  If you are questioning whether you will actually put something on a girl, don't bother putting it in the g/n box.  If you have a girl, you will acquire so much pink/purple/pastel stuff that you will have no need to put boy clothes on a girl.  The problem I come across now is the clothes that say one size but actually fit a different size.  I've been putting them with the size they fit but I know I'm going to be confused when I start going through them again.

  • I would organize by size and then separate by gender within that, so you can get the ones you need easily after the baby is born. We have a lot of gender-neutral newborn/tiny baby stuff, too.

For long-term storage, I have them separated 0-6 , 6-12, 12-18, and then by year with 2T+. But I also organize by fit, so some don't match up w their tags. I also donate the stuff I don't like very much, so there's only one box for each.

  • I have separate bins for girl only and gender neutral. I basically put them away as she grows out of them, so by default they end up in size order. FWIW, I bought tons of boys clothes for DD, especially pants. DH is anti-ruffle butt and that limits our options significantly. So you may put her in navy pants. My DD has definitely worn many a navy pant.
  • I would just organize by size and then pull out what you need when the baby is born.

  • I have organized the kids clothes into boy only, then girl only, then neutral each by size.  They are in the attic until #3 comes along hopefully next year =)

  • I have them all by size and in the space bag vacuum storage bags...HUGE space saver and keeps them organized and safe. I keep them under DD's crib even because they're so small once you suck out the air...

  • I went by size...I too had tons of boxes in DD closet.  This past weekend I bought large vacu-seal bags and reorganized.  The bags can easily fit under a bed and now I have all that extra space :)
  • I put things in grocery bags (by size, and put all the pj's together), write the size on the bag, then throw all the bags in a giant rubbermaid bin.
  • I keep a large box in the bottom of LO's closet. As I try stuff on her and it doesn't fit her I throw it in the box. When the box is full (like every 6 mos) I organize it by size and put it large bins. Honestly DD does not have much that is gender neutral. She has a couple things from her newborn days like PJ's and some white onezies but that is it. For #2 I plan to just go through them before he/she is born and pull out what I need!
