I'm not a fan of "just wait until your doc says something" or "who cares about weight gain"
Just gonna say, you never know if you're going to be the one who snaps back 2.5 seconds after birth, or have to work for 6months to a year to lose all that weight. This could by my UO for the day but: I think the bump group think of "go ahead and gain weight as much as you want until the doc says so" is a bad idea. How bout, put down the ben and jerry's and pick up an apple, or banana, or a fruit salad.. maybe cook yourself something healthy. Stop justifying unhealthy habits
*gets off soapbox*
Oh, I totally agree. Baby eats what you eat! If you shouldn't have all that junk, neither should baby. You are supposed to eat more calories, but you're supposed to eat more GOOD calories, not empty ones from junk food!
But if she's shocked at a little 4 lb. weight gain, that last tri is going to be brutal. I didn't gain anything until my last trimester and then WHAM! There it all came! She's probably just bloated or doesn't realize that your weight can fluctuate up to 5 lb. during the day.
Self magazine this month (or last month? I get behind) had an article about disordered eating during pregnancy. They did a survey and almost 50% of respondents claimed to have engaged in some sort of disordered eating while pregnant, and most had a negative body image while pregnant.
They commented that there's a disconnect between what doctors claim to have said and what pregnant women claim to have heard when it comes to weight. Most doctors will say they counsel women about healthy weight gain and most women will say their doctor never said anything. So when I read the "don't worry until your doctor says something" comments or the "I gained 70 lbs and my doctor didn't care" comments, I wonder if people are really hearing their doctors.
FWIW, I gained 42 lbs over the course of my pregnancy, and I got a lecture about healthy weight gain at every appointment from 6 months on. If I hadn't had that lecture, I probably would have gained more.
It was an interesting read if anyone's interested in it
FWIW, it sounds like the OP is on track for healthy weight gain if she is +5lbs @ 10 weeks.
Exactly! I hate the "eating for two" attitude and using pregnancy as an excuse to load up on crap. Yes, you need to eat and you need to eat more BUT more healthy stuff and you also need to gain weight, but at a healthy rate and healhty TOTAL amount gained. I just chuckle at the shock of 4 lbs which is perfectly normal at this stage. The poster also seems shocked that you are supposed to gain (given you are average weight PP) up to 35lbs. It just sounds like she's expecing not to gain anything at all and that certainly won't happen for all the good reasons

I agree! Its one thing to give yourself a little treat for dessert, or take a day off from exercise when you're having a rough day while preggo.... But def not an excuse to be a tub of lard.
It bugs me when ladies pig out and become lazy, then complain about how swollen their feet are, or how big the baby is going to be. Don't wanna hear it, ya did it to yourself.
