receiving blanket usage??

I read all the time how receiving blankets are a must, but I don't quite understand what they are used for, or if I need em. Some ppl use them for burp rags, right? I have like 20 burp rags. Some use them to swaddle, i think? but I have swaddle blankets, like the velcro kind Are they used as a blanket when baby is cold? I have soft fuzzy blankets in a variety of sizes...so what would I use receiving blankets for? I dont' have any, so do I need to buy some. Please help

Re: receiving blanket usage??

  • You can use them as a nursing cover ( I also had a nursing cover I used), a light weight blanket to cover the car seat or the baby when the soft fuzzy blankets are too much. I have used them to put down on the floor at friends house to set the baby on. Any number of things really.

  • I guess it's personal preference but we used them all the time. I don't like the velcro swaddlers, and I like to have a light blanket for the car so the A+A ones are perfect. It sounds like you have a bunch of options so you'll probably be fine without - but getting a couple probably wouldn't hurt either. Also, the velcro swaddlers we had were way too big for a newborn even though they were "newborn" size.

  • We had a ton of receiving blankets when DS1 was born, and I very rarely used them.  I used bibs for burping (he hardly ever spit up), and the fuzzy blankets for swaddling.  I think the only thing I ever used our receiving blankets for was to put on the floor when DS did tummy time.  They're really a personal preference--if you don't think you'll need them, don't buy any yet!
  • They can make an easy place to change baby too.  My friend keeps hers on the changing pad because it is easier to switch out than the changing pad cover.

  • I never had any for ds. But, he wasnt ever swaddled. We always used the soft fuzzy ones.

  • Lots of the receiving blankets we got are too small to swaddle her with, so we haven't used them yet. The exception is the A&A blankets. We use those to swaddle her during the day, when it's warmer in the house, since they are so nice and lightweight. Then we use cotton jersey Velcro swaddlers at night.
