How many Bloody Noses is too many???

Despite using saline spray every night, Nate still gets a lot of bloody noses. Two last week and we are working on 2 so far this week. I have started to keep track on my calendar so I can discuss further with the ENT in September.

I hate to have him get yet another procedure, but cleaning the large pools of blood off his sheets every week is getting kinda old.......Anyone deal with this?

Re: How many Bloody Noses is too many???

  • Yes, or rather my mom did with me.  I used to get bloody noses all the time.  If I got hot (playing or what not) I would get one, if I sneezed, if I blew my nose too hard, you get the picture.  And it wouldn't be 5 minutes either.  My mom would be in the bathroom with me for 15-20 mins sometimes.  I used to have to lie down afterwards.

With me it was a combination of things.  Apparently, as a child I'd fallen out of my crib (drop side crib) and landed square on my face - knocked out my teeth even and apparently this did something to my nose and the bones grew twisted - not noticeable until puberty when you start getting your grown up face.  That twisting stretched the lining of my nose too thin so anything would cause the skin to rupture and start bleeding.  Second, I had a Vitamin K deficiency which wouldn't let me clot quickly - hence the long time in the bathroom.

It was torture - I used to have go get my nose cauterized all the time.

I don't know about the face trauma thing with Nate but maybe the vitamin thing might be worth looking into it.  After getting some Vitamin K shots and surgery to repair my septum, I rarely ever get nosebleeds anymore and if I do, they're fast-resolving.

    Good luck.  {{hugs}} to Nate.

  • I am totally of the mind that he has a deviated septum. By looking at his MRI's even my uneducated eyes can see that the nose area is not symmetrical. He also has a very flat bridge to his nose and it is super short besides. it was very "piggy" looking when he was a baby, but looks much better now....

One of his neurology reports says "facial hypoplasia" I have not pursued that phrase yet with anyone...I may look into some vitamin k sups, but I have no idea about the dosage....
