C-sections

Gym/Workout

Hey Ladies,

I'm 4 weeks pp and feeling good.  My tummy is a wee bit sore from time to time, but overall I feel great.  I'm back to the normal grind as far as house work and taking care of baby.

I was wondering...how long before I can hit the gym?  I wouldn't say that I was an avid runner or anything, but I enjoy the treadmill (light jogging) and elliptical as well as weight training.  I know the recovery time is 6-8 weeks, but I'm wondering how long after that will I feel like trying to get back into a fitness routine.

Thoughts?

I hope you are all well:)

Re: Gym/Workout

  • I had a really great recovery this time around and started running again (just little 3 mile runs) at about 4 weeks pp, but I ran all the way through pregnancy and went for a 3 mile run the night before my c-section.  I think you can go by how you feel -- I felt great and running felt fine so I just went with it.  My brother is an OB and said although he wouldn't tell all of his patients this, if you're in great shape and feeling okay, the likelihood of you doing anything damaging if you feel fine while working low is practically zero.  I took it easy as far as pace and mileage went the first few runs but now I'm able to do some speed training and longer distances and I feel great.  I also started going to the gym and lifting at about 7 weeks pp.  Good luck with getting back to working out!

  • I worked out until 39 weeks in bootcamp.   I started on the eliptical machine 3 weeks after my c-section and had no problems.  At my 5 week appointment, my doctor told me I could work out as normal again.  Just to try it and do what feels right.
  • I just had my 6 week check up this past week and was told I was clear to do everything EXCEPT abdominal work for another 2 months.  So I'd say you would be okay to start with a light job at the gym.  I would wait until your 6 week check up before you start lifting anything heavier than your LO and the weight of the carseat.

Take it little by little and always wait a day or two after to see how you feel before you increase anything!
