Breastfeeding

spitting up after nursing, but not after taking bottle

Does anyone know why a baby would spit up after nursing at the breast but not after eating from a bottle?

DD2 almost always spits up after nursing from my breast, but if I give her a bottle she doesn't spit up.

She takes about 3oz of milk from a bottle and when we did a weighed feeding she was also taking about 3oz from the breast. I am just confused on this?

She has been diagnosed with mspi/reflux. She is on meds and I do the diet (have been on it for about a month now). I also make sure to burp her and keep her upright (both when breast/from the bottle).

Re: spitting up after nursing, but not after taking bottle

  • My LO had his first bottle last night, and I noticed he didn't spit up/vomit after the bottle either.  He was also much happier.  I'm thinking maybe it has something to do with the flow?

  • Have you seen a LC? I think sometimes it can also be a positioning issue. I would make an appt with a LC.

  • You probably have a strong letdown which would cause her to gulp more air.  My milk literally sprays out when I letdown.  My DD spit up a ton until this month.  She was gaining weight and happy so I wasn't concerned.

This!  Also, almost all babies have some form of reflux. The immaturity of their esophagus at this age causes spitting up.  Unless they are spitting up whole feedings, my LC said it is not that big of a concern.
