XP: If you had karyotyping done - Qs for you

Hey all,

We got our genetic results back from our recent loss after less than a week. Trisomy 12, which is incompatible with life. There is huge relieved feeling for us in finally getting some answers (this is our 3rd loss). Also to know that it was random and unlikely to happen again (that specific trisomy.)

Our doc/RE wants us to do karyotyping but is doubtful that we'll find an issue. I'm cool with ruling anything we can rule out.

So Qs: How long did it take to get results?

Did you learning anything from your results?

Did it alter your course or plan?

Many thanks.

Re: XP: If you had karyotyping done - Qs for you

  • I think that it took about two weeks to get the results.

The results didn't show anything abnormal-so it didn't change our course of action-but did give us some piece of mind.  If something would have shown up then we probably would only do IVF if we could do PGD as well.

  • I'm so sorry for you loss but am glad that you have answers and that your prognosis is good for future cycles and that your RE is proactive with testing.

We had karyotying done along with a full thrombophilia and immune panel so we didn't have our results discussion until they were all in, around 3 weeks. Ours was normal so the karyotyping itself didn't change our treatment plan, but other issues were flagged that are being addressed. I had an immune panel and RPL panel done previously, but not all panels include the same tests. Go figure.

    Good luck with your diagnostics.

Thanks I've also had an RPL panel run (after our 2nd loss) and our RE looked over those results "all normal" to see if there was anything left to test for. Nothing, so now onto karyotyping.

    Thanks for your answer!

My husband's karyotype was sent separate of mine- it was actually one of the first things we tested in 2010. It took 10 weeks because the lab lost the results and I was never sure how long it was supposed to be taking so I didn't get aggressive about asking for it. Note to you: Chase someone down if it takes more than two weeks!

Mine came back in 2 weeks with the rest of my RPL panel in 2011.

We both tested normal, and it did not change our treatments.

  • We had a very similar experience to ThereBeDragons. We had the first ones sent out and didn't hear anything back until we were already half way through our 2nd cycle. The doctor was looking in the computer and noticed they weren't there, although we distinctly remembered having it done, so it meant more blood work and waiting. I would have been irate if there were issues and we weren't aware of them / involved in another cycle, but fortunately it all came back clear for both of us.

Nag them to make sure they do it properly! Good Luck, too.

(Live in Europe) TTC since 1/2010
  • It took a little over two weeks for me to get results.  They didn't do Jim for some reason.

I didn't learn anything from mine and it didn't change our treatment.  But, that was because the karyotype showed nothing.  If something had popped up...

    ~SAIF/PAIF/Everyone Welcome~

    Me= 37 and DH = 41

IVF #2 - a version of antagonist with EPP (with HGH, intralipids, lovenox and BA); 6 retrieved, 4 mature, 3 fertilized, 2 blasts and 1 frozen blast transferred on day 5 = BFN.

    IVF #3 April was postponed to May, May was canceled. June/July was canceled. Had a cyst aspiration and then began IVF #3 in August. ER on 8/22; ET on 8/24 with AH. +HPT on 9/5. Beta #1 (11dpo) = 3; Beta #2 (15dpo) = 29; Beta #3 (17dpo) = 60; Beta #4 (19 dpo) = 118. Heartbeat at 6 weeks 6 days =132.  Lil is here!

    TTC#2:  Trigger + TI = BFN; Clomid + Trigger + IUI = BFN.

    IVF #4:  BCP + MDLF + Lovenox = 7R, 1F = Transferred 1 6-cell embryo on day 3 = BFN

    IVF #5:  MDLF + Lovenox = 4R, 1F = Transferred 1 10-cell compacting embryo on day 3 = BFN

IVF #6:  (New RE):  Long Antagonist November 2014 (transferred two 8 cell grade 1 embryos and froze one blast) = BFN

    FET#1:  BFN

  • So Qs: How long did it take to get results?  Ours took about two weeks. It was done after our first IVF ended in m/c at 12 weeks. Did you learning anything from your results? Yep. My DH has a balanced translocation that he never knew about.  We had never even heard of a BT until this. Did it alter your course or plan? Yes it did. We did two rounds of PGD and only had 1 embryo of 18 tested that came back normal/balanced. No pregnancy resulted. After the terrible PGD results (which were in line with what a geneticist told us...80-90% would be abnormal based on DHs specific dx.), we moved on to DS. And that was the best decision for our family. I gave birth to our precious daughter one week ago. :) Best of luck and I'm so sorry for your losses.
