Empty sac at 6 weeks

I had to have an early ultrasound yesterday to rule out an ectopic due to spotting and low progesterone. The tech said the sac was empty. She said I was so early it was hard to tell if Friday's ultrasound will bring different results. She wasn't very reassuring and I didn't get to seemy dr because she was at her other office location yesterday. If you saw an empty sac early, what was the result for you later? I was charting so I'm sure of my dates, thoug I realize that can still be off a day or two or maybe I had late implantation. I would have been 6w1dyesterday. She didn't give me any information about how the sac was growing even though it was empty. I'm alternating between believing emerging will be fine and preparing myself for a loss.

Re: Empty sac at 6 weeks

  • I just feel like the whole setup was so odd. If she had just said, ok, we are checking for an ectopic and that is all, imwoild have left feeling good (it's not ectopic). But at the end she just goes "were you told we might not see anything?" Uh, no. And then she says, oh well you're so early. And that was it. I tried getting more information about is this normal, is the sac measuring appropriately, but she wouldn't/couldn't give it to me. I feel like the nurse also should have set up that we might not see anything. I knew not to expect to see the heartbeat, but really have no idea where I fall in the range of normal to high risk after that appt.

  • I had an u/s at 5 weeks 2 days and as you can see from the pic in my siggy all we saw was a sac and she zoomed in and same that the circle inside was a yolk sac. I could see a tiny shadow of the baby but no h/b at that point. She prepared me that we would probably not see a h/b and it would just be a sac at that point. She measured me and said I was 5 weeks 3 days. I hope you will be able to see something better at your next appt!

With my DS, I know when I ovulated and at 5 week 6 days there was not a HB yet, but was a yolk sack. You certainly could have O'd later, and wouldn't know unless you were temping. I O'd 2.5 weeks late with this LO!

  • I've heard that it is normal to only see a sac this early on. I would still try to get a hold of your doctor sometime today, to get more reassurance.

  • Was it a transvaginal u/s or abdominal?

At 6w3d on an abdominal ultrasound all you could see was an empty sac, you could see the fetal pole on the transvaginal ultrasound.  At 8w3d you could see the fetus on the abdominal ultrasound.

I was temping so I do know exactly how far along I'm supposed to,be. I know I could have implanted late and even with temping the O date isn't exact, so I could be off a few days.

  • I hope that your next ultrasound goes well.

Even with charting, you can never be quite sure.  I was using ovulation test sticks and was off a bit, though I was so sure of when I O'd.  I had O pain as usual, and a surge.

Keep us posted.  I hope that there is growth the next few days.

Even transvaginal at 6 weeks it's really iffy to see anything.  If your days were off by a day or two it really throws off the development and what they would see.  Hopefully your follow up ultrasound brings better news.

  • I just went through something similar to this two weeks ago. I scheduled my first Dr's appt based on my LMP which would mean that I would see my doctor at 8 weeks. Upon going in for my appointment and having the Dr do a transvaginal ultrasound, all we saw was an empty sac. She told me to come back in two weeks for an abdominal ultrasound in hopes that they would see more. Two weeks later I am happy to report that I am JUST NOW 8 weeks along and everythink looks great. That means that I ovulated 2 weeks later than I thought.

  • I had close to the same thing happen to me- Doc offered an ultrasound at 4 weeks 5 days :just to see" but then didn't find anything and I was so fearful. We checked my HCG levels, and they came back at 1280 (4 weeks 5 days), which doc said is too low to see the sac- they usually won't see it until 2500, and no heartbeat until 5000. We ran my HCG again 4 days later (first was 8/1 second 8/6) and it was up to 11,450 (5 weeks 3 days, which shows normal progress. Doc offered to do another ultrasound as he would be able to see everything now, but I declined and will wait until my 9 week regularly scheduled exam. I'm sure they did blood work, do you know your numbers?

I hope everything was just a little early for you!

This information makes me feel better. My hcg was only 375 at 5w2d, so even at a doubling rate, I'd barely be at 2500 by yesterday. The tech told me that it needs to e at least 1000 but that didn't help me much because I'd have to e a 1,000.

I can't tell you how happy it makes me to read this.  I went for my 1st u/s yesterday at what should have been 8w5d, according to LMP.  I had a transvaginal u/s and it only showed an empty sac.  The ob said I'm just earlier than I thought, but of course I've spent the entire day today posting on my month board (March) and Googling and totally freaking out.  I'm scheduled for another u/s next week.  I'm trying not to jump out of my skin in anticipation.  Your story sounds just like mine, so I'm hoping for the same results!

I was charting, so I know I'm not two weeks behind. I may not be exactly 6w1d due to a variety of factors, but I'm positive I'm not 2 weeks behind where I thought I was. I got a positive at 10 DPO with negatives for days before that too.

  • I was charting last time and temping and still wound up measuring a full week behind at my early ultrasounds. Honestly, the sensitivity of the machine varies so much, I wouldn't worry (fat chance, I know) until you gets second ultrasound.

I'd probably call and ask if I could get a set of betas run though, that would go a long way towards reassuring you that it's too early.

Also, last time my betas were a hair under 2000 and we couldn't see anything but the gestational sac at that point

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you! I freaked out too, but just remember that ovulation doesn't always occur mid-cycle and that can throw the dates off.

Keep your hopes up. I have seen other posts from people who experienced an empty sac at 6 weeks and went back a couple weeks later, and there was baby!

Thanks for sharing your story. That helps. I go on Friday for a follow up so I think we should be able to see the yolk sack at a very minimum and maybe the fetal pole at this point. Still thinking I won't see a heartbeat. I'll ask for more betas if this is still iffy. I will hopefully be seeing my dr Friday too so I can ask more questions.
