Category B drug - Claritin-D

I'm weighing my options on taking Claritin D. I've taken it a few times during the last 4 weeks because I have been so miserable and benedryl was NOT cutting it. Some doctors have sudafed on the safe list, some do not, my doctor does not. Anyone have any feedback? I know I need to call my OB, and I will tomorrow.

Because of my allergies I'm not sleeping, miserable constantly, and foggy. I'm just curious if anyone else is taking it or sudafed.

Re: Category B drug - Claritin-D

  • My allergist cleared me to take Claritin.  I miss my Allegra since Claritin does not work as well.  Zyrtec can also be used.  Good luck!

  • I was cleared to take Claritin-D during my first pregnancy and did a few times when the allergies were really bad. I would take it again this pregnancy if I was really miserable.

  • My doc said both Claritin and Zyrtec were fine. I take Zyrtec everyday (and did with DD as well) or else I get sick pretty quick.

  • I took it a few times with my first.  No biggie.  I take a cat B asthma med every day.  Just know that it might not work because pregnancy causes swelling in your sinuses that has nothing to do with allergies...  I used a netti pot a lot with my first pregnancy and it was heaven!

I take symbicort, a category c drug for my asthma. My doctor didn't tell me to stop taking it when I saw him. My asthma can be bad to control. If my asthma and allergies get of control, I end up in the hospital.

  • I take Zyrtec without the D.  Do you really need the decongestant or could you try it without?  I know we all have extra mucus, etc. going on because of pregnancy and I suffer from allergies too, so I feel ya.

Oh and I take mine every night.

Same for me.  I wouldn't worry about taking it then.  The benefits of taking it outweigh the risks!  I saw that albuterol isn't the best during pregnancy either, but I use my inhalor when I need it!  Not having oxygen is a lot worse! :)

  • Claritin-D is sahe in pregnancy. SO is Zyrtec, or any of the other antihistamines. Pregnancy is hard enough, there is no reason to be miserable from your allergies.
