Has anyone started this yet? I would like to but I am not sure DS is too interested in being trained yet. He has some interest when I use the bathroom, but doesn't seem to mind when he has a wet or dirty diaper.
If you have started what has worked for you? I think I have information overload with everything I have read or heard from others. What rewards have you used besides M&Ms? Which seems to be the most popular I have found. I would rather not use candy, but if that gets me the best results.
Would LOVE to have DS trained in the next couple of months, so I don't have to lift him to the changing table when I will be absolutely huge. But I know he will most likely have a different plan instead.
TIA
Re: Potty Training
Last week DD peed on the potty twice, nothing since then. I still put her on it when she says she has to pee, but nothing has happened. I think I could get her potty trained now but it would take alot of work so I'm planning on waiting until she is more consistent with actually going on the potty.
If you have success I'd love to hear how you did it. I gave her swedish fish when she went last week.
We haven't started and won't even consider it until September since we're going to be away at the end of August. I'm not rushing though. We'll probably start around 2 unless we see she's super interested and stuff or they tell us at daycare that they think she's ready/she's been having success at school. I personally think 18 months is a bit young and that it will end up taking longer than when they're a bit older, but I haven't looked into it a ton. While I hate changing diapers, the idea of having to drop everything and run to a bathroom is something I can wait for.
For rewards, I was thinking stickers. I've mostly heard M&Ms too but I'd prefer not to give a food reward. Still, I bet that's what we'll end up doing.
Our potty has a foam seat and DS likes to chew on it. Gross. But, one day DH was watching him and let him do this so now I have to tell him NO when he tries to take the top off and sit his hiney down on it instead. He's not ready so I haven't done any research at all.
As for food as a reward - I love it! so I would have no problem doing that for DS.
I just PT my 2.5 year old not too long ago, and the best advice I would give you is to wait until your child is 100% ready. By the third day, he was completely trained and has maybe one accident a week--it was really easy. If you do it when they're young it's likely going to take a whole lot longer and it was tough enough for those two days where he was having lots of accidents.
In terms of rewards, we did stickers and when he earned 7 stickers he got a big prize. That was motivation enough. We did not use junk food.
Here's a checklist of when LO is ready and a good time to start:
