Twitching

I'm wondering how much twitching is normal and how long (if at all) your lo did it for.  My DS is almost 9 weeks actual and 4 days adjusted.  His chin quivers at times- mostly when he's upset.  And now I'm noticing his foot twitching- kind of like thumper.  He usually does it when he's eating.    Alittle history on my lo- he was born at 31 weeks 4days b/c of unexplained PROM.  He was 5lbs 10ozs.  He now weighs 11lbs 9ozs and seems to be developing normally.  His brain scans showed no bleeds when he was in the NICU.  Does anyone have any experience or info on this?  I googled it and it scared the heck out of me.

  • Oh yeah....I forgot about that. Normal-sounding.

I would not consult Dr Google about baby twitching. That sounds like you could pull up nightmares.

I seem to remember reading something about this being very common in infants as their muscles develop, to the point that they can jerk so hard that they'll wake themselves up at night! If it's every now and again, and doesn't seem to disrupt what your LO is doing I wouldn't give it a second thought.

I have seen seizures in infants (very scary) and believe that you would absolutely know that what they were doing was not normal. The rhythmic convulsing is nothing like newborn twitches, and they're cathartic afterward.

^^^ Our NICU neighbor was in for seizures. Trust me, you'd know without a shadow of a doubt.

  • Mine definitely does this.  The hubby blamed it on me because I am kind of twitchy too, especially when it comes to habitual toe wiggling. :)

  • she definitely does this with her legs during feedings.  When sleeping, she will do leg lifts in her sleep!  We joke she's trying to strengthen her core :)
