Pregnant after 35

rh negative

Hi,

I am new to this group- found out last week that I am 5 weeks. I had my annual gyn exam already scheduled so they did some preliminary blood work and I found out I am rh negative. I did some research on-line and everything I read suggested I should have the Rh immunoglobulin shot, but my Dr. said I only need it if I bleed. This seems confusing to me, I'm not sure what to think. Does anyone have experience with this? Many thanks-

Re: rh negative

  • If I remember correctly, for your first pregnancy, you don't need the shot unless you bleed.  You will have the shot after you deliver if the baby's father is RH positive since the baby could possibly be positive as well.  For any subsequent pregnancies, you will have to have the shot around week 28 unless you bleed earlier than that.

You do not need the shot if the baby's father is also RH negative.

I am O neg and my husband O pos. I did have spotting through my entire pregnancy, but was told RHogam was not needed for that - only if a m/c.

I had the RHogam injection at 30 weeks, and 48 hrs after delivery. That should be all you need. My son is O pos, so that is why I needed the dose after delivery.

  • I am rh negative as well.  For my first pregnancy I had no bleeding so I got the shot in the 3rd tri as well as after DD1 was born.  For my second, I had some bleeding in the 1st tri so I got the shot then as well as in the 3rd tri.  I actually don't remember if I got a shot after DD2 was born.  I had an unplanned c-section so that day is kind of a blur to me, but I am pretty sure I got it.

  • You will also have one if they do any invasive procedures like an amnio. Anytime there could be a chance of of the blood mixing. So after birth if the baby tests positive you will get a shot. Its been so long since my first I don't remember if I got one at 28 weeks but I did get it at delivery.
  • Thanks for the helpful info!
  • I am rh negative and had the shot (I forget exactly when) with my 1st child -- might have been 28 weeks? My son ended up having the same blood type as me, so I did not need a second shot after delivery.

With this pregnancy, I had the shot at 28 weeks. Before they do the shot, they take some blood to confirm the rh negative status and to make sure there has been no mingling of baby's and mom's blood up to that point. Then, you get the shot in your hip. We will see what this baby's blood is when she's born. If her blood is the same as mine, no shot needed. If she has DH's blood type (O positive), I'll get the shot after delivery.

  • With my 1st pregnancy, I had the rhogam shot during my third tri. I didn't need the after birth shot because DS was rh negative too.

For this pregnancy, I have had one so far at 30 weeks.

  • With my first PG, I had the shot at 7 weeks (had bleeding) and again around week 28 or 30, I think? I don't think I had one in the hospital, but DD is O neg, like me.
