Did anyone's RE prescribe them antibiotics to take prior to ER? I've read mixed things about taking them vs not taking them. The NIH published 1 study that had the rate of miscarriage increased when on Ab vs not. It did worry me a bit to read that.
Thanks!
Re: Prophylactic antibiotics?
I have to take them for 5 days starting the night of ER, and I'm not thrilled about it. (All these meds, and it is the antibiotics I feel strongest about!) I had a long discussion with my RE about it, and he said that, while rare, infections from the procedure can be nasty, and hurt future fertility. And I have been thinking about it, and I do think it will be nice to not have to worry if any post-ER cramping is the start of a deadly infection.
Do you have a link to that study? Statistics can be easily manipulated, and a lot of things go in to the validity of a study. A study based off of 200 pregnancies is going to be a lot less valid than one based off of 3000, for example. And even if one study shows a result, often other studies contradict it. So many variables. I would not worry.

I can't seem to figure out to link on my iPad lol. Try googling ivf prophylactic antiobiotics and it's on the NIH website.
I hear what your saying though. I manage clinical trials for a pharma company and know all too well how these stats work lol. But the p value does not lie which is why I was a little concerned. I have my prep meeting tomorrow so I will ask my RE since I have been relying on Dr Google for now! (yes always a bad idea)
The only one I could find was
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15687942
(sorry, can't do clicky) and that can't be the one you are referring to, between the non-significant increase of miscarriage, the small sample size, and the fact that it studied antibiotics that are not the norm for prescribing. (Most REs do a z-pack or doxycycline, I believe.)
If you only found one study, I wouldn't worry. People are complicated, IVF is complicated, and there are just too many variables to account for. If multiple large studies showed a correlation, I would worry, but not if one or two small ones did. Also, depending on when the study was done, protocols themselves have changed significantly. I never expected to be on some of the meds they are giving me, but they say success rates are better. If the antibiotics do have a negative effect, maybe the newer protocols counteract it. Let us know what your RE says...I am interested.

Yours doesn't have to be a sad story
My RE's office usually prescribes 1gm of Zithromax to be taken the night before ER, but I'm allergic to erythromycin so I was prescribed 100mg of Doxy starting 2 days before ER for 7 days.
TTC since 10/2010
IUIs # 1-5 = BFFN
IVF # 1(July 2012) = BFN
IVF # 2 (November 2012) = BFP (MIssed MC D&C @ 8w3d on 1/10/13)
Hubby and I both have to take a 10 day course prior to ER. Starting on day 3 of my last bcp pack. Then I take doxycycline again at the time of ER.
I was given Doxycycline twice per day for five days, but I didn't start taking it until after ER. I also had to take an oral steroid for swelling. DH didn't have to take anything.
I am strongly against over-prescribing antibiotics, so I can see some of PP's points, but I haven't taken one since college, so I figured it was OK...
