Dr.'s Appointment

Maybe I'm really off the mark here and I am a first time parent so I'd understand if my expectations are off, but I don't even get to meet with my OB for anything until September 27th. That will be 12 weeks along and I just feel like that's really late. What if something happens before that? I go in today to meet with the nurse so she can give me an information packet and update my health information but they don't even confirm pregnancy. I realize that it's unlikely that that 3 (okay, so maybe closer to 8) HPT's I took could be wrong with all reading positive/pregnant but I just feel like I'm missing out on something here. Am I just nuts?

ETA: I had to edit because my subject didn't make sense and it was bothering me.

Re: Dr.'s Appointment

  • I would personally ask for a sooner appointment- that is really late.  With my last pregnancy they saw me at 6 weeks and that is when I had my bloodwork done.  At 7 weeks I was off to have my first ultrasound.  I think the "normal" is 7-10 weeks when they first see you.

  • I would push for an earlier appointment - 8 weeks at the latest. I'm going in this Friday for mine and I'll be 6w2d to meet with the doctor and also for an U/S. They'll also want me to come in again 2 weeks later (not sure what that visit will be for yet)

Ask for bloodwork today when you go in for your appointment! I definitely would. 12 weeks seems very late. My dr. has a confirmation appointment (4-5 weeks), then an appointment to check the heartbeat at 8-ish weeks. Then the (voluntary) genetic test (where I'll have our first u/s) at 12 weeks.

  • this is my third pregnancy...and this is my experience.

first pregnancy  i called after getting a bfp. first appointment was at 8 weeks with a nurse. this did another test, no blood work to confirm. gave us an informational packet. next appointment was at 12 weeks for ultrasound. we visited the ER between the two appointments because of bleeding, they diagnosed me with placenta previa and it corrected itself.

with my second i called after getting 7 bfp's...i was a bit over the top. they scheduled me for my 8 and 12 week appointments, but i miscarried at 5 weeks.

this time around i called after missing af and 2 bfp's. dr had left a message in my chart so i go in on wed. for an ultrasound at 6 weeks to make sure everything is ok.

every office is different my bf went in the day after she called with her bfp.

  • Same here.  Unless any bleeding or cramping issues-  I wont be seeing my doctor until 12 wk appt (Sept 20th).   For 1st time parents they have a nurses appt at 8 wks to go over all information.  But since this is 2nd- the nurse will just call me to go over everything.   It seems to be the common practice in my area at all of the OB offices.   In fact unless there have been previous issue, the dont do U/S scans until wk 20.  It always makes me a bit jealous when I read on here of so many people getting u/s at 8 wks.  I would love to see the little peanut.  I dont know if its an insurance coverage thing or what.

  • I'm high-risk and my appt isn't until I'm 11 weeks. It's the norm at my practice.

  • Most doctor's don't do urine or blood tests to confirm pregnancy. I got my first appt with DS at 7 weeks and that was a basic history, pap, and basic bloodwork to make sure I was healthy and to check that my immunizations were up to date.
  • I called my office today to tell them I tested positive. They had me come in today for urine test and to draw blood. I get blood test results tomorrow. We also set up my first appointment, which will be at about 7 weeks. I did all of this with the nurse. I did not see my Dr, but I will be switching Dr soon anyway. Mine doesn't deliver anymore :(

  • Different practices do things differently. My OB likes to see patients around 8 weeks. We do the updated info packet and then a quick u/s to get a more accurate due date. You could certainly ask to see the doctor if you have questions. In most cases, the nurse can answer any questions you may have. I don't think you can hear the heartbeat on the doppler until 12 weeks either.

This. That's pretty late to be seen for the first time. That's almost a third through your entire pregnancy.

  • Well I just got back from the appointment and it's apparently standard practice to not see you until around 12 weeks. They weren't trying to get me in any sooner because I wasn't considered high risk, which I suppose is fine, but I also kind of wanted to see the little one growing. Unless anything major happens I won't see my OB until Sept. 27th. They didn't do a blood or urine test to confirm so before I went to the appointment I tested at home again and the lines were way darker than last week so I consider that to be a good sign.

  • Wow that sounds late... The same day I got a bfp I called my doctor and made the appointment. I went last week already for my first appointment, not even 5 weeks, and met with the nurse and the doctor. I'm so glad because this is my first pregnancy at 34 and I want to do everything right from the beginning! I'm going next Tuesday for my first ultra sound. My next appointment with the doctor is at the end of the month, then once a month after that until later on in the 3rd trimester. If I had to wait until 12 weeks, I'd be going crazy! But maybe you are very healthy and low risk?

I guess I'm just considered low risk....which is good. For the most part I'm healthy but I gained weight like crazy in graduate school and I've been trying to lose it ever since graduation. However, it still means I'm overweight so I thought they may have wanted to see me again at 8 weeks.
