I heard of stories of people backing out because the baby isn't the gender they wanted, does this happen a lot, or only sometimes? would you back out if the pregnant mom found the gender wasn't what you wanted?
In my experience situations are presented according to the circumstances.
For example. a couple who would only adopt a boy may not be shown to a birth mom w/gender unknown because of this situation.
I guess if a mistake on the U/S is made, PAPs that would only adopt a certain gender will have a tough call at delivery. I've never heard of this happening but it's within the scope of possibility.

Hmmm, none of the agencies that we researched allowed specifying gender so I'm not sure how often this would come up. It was my understanding that it's not normally allowed for this exact reason. For me personally I would be fine with it, but I guess that's kind of a silly answer because I don't have strong feelings either way on gender, I would love either!
Our agency didn't allow you to specify gender. If you backed out of an adoption due to something like that, they reserved the right to drop you from the program.
We weren't allowed to specify a preferred gender through out agency. I never even thought about specifying a gender because if it was my body that was pregnant, I couldn't choose which gender my baby would be. When we met with DD's BM, she kept saying "she" and "her," I was thrilled that the baby was a girl, but I would have been just as thrilled if she had been a boy!
Like some of the previous posters, our agency doesn't allow hopeful adoptive parents to specify a gender preference. I'm sure that there are times when a couple backs out, but I haven't heard about any specific situations like that.
Our agency allows you to specify, but they do warn that it could seriously extend your wait time. I'd imagine that, like PP said, in situations where the gender was unknown, that AP's profile just would not be shown.
