Is this weird?

Nikolai is almost 14 months old.  He's never really had many bottles because I EBF.  He only ever got one if I wasn't around to put him down for a nap or to bed.  We've had a nanny for the last 3 months so he's gotten a bottle for his afternoon nap 3 times a week, but that's the extent of it.  It's not even a very big one - just 2-3 oz to relax him.  I nurse him right before I send him up with the nanny for a nap.

Is it weird that at 14 months he's still taking a bottle though?  He drinks out of a straw or sippy during the day (usually water, very occasionally WCM).  But I haven't even considered giving him a sippy for naps.  It just never occurred to me.  Should I push it?

According to my pedi, at this age they should not be getting bottles. I would try a sippy.

Mine said this too, but I had a hard time getting my lo to stop the bottle at that age. The main concern is poor dental. The bottle can cause many problems with the growth of teeth and the general health of the mouth. Try the sippy, but don't be discouraged if it doesn't work out for him, yet. It's a comfort thing that you're going to have to find a substitute for. I was able to wean mine completely off around 16 months.

You think it could cause dental problems with only 3 bottles a week?

  • I don't think it's the end of the world, but if you can get him to take a sippy instead, try switching him. He may not mind. Do what works, he's still young.
  • I had B down to one bottle before bed by the time he was 16 months, and then one day I just thought I would try the sippy and see how it went.  He didn't even care or notice that I switched it.  So we are now bottle free.

All you can do is try it.  If he makes a big fuss and it doesn't work, it doesn't work for you guys right now.  Give it a week, and then maybe try it again.  Eventually, he will be off bottles, but I really don't see how 3 bottles a week is a big deal.

  • Everything PPs have said. Plus, they make sippies w/soft spouts to make an easier transition. I would try that first, it seems less jarring than going from soft squishy nipple to solid immovable spout. GL.

Homestly, if it's just 3 times a week, I would definitely try a sippy, but if he doesn't take to it right away I wouldn't rush him. Maybe wait a month and try again.  I'm far from a medical professional though, so I don't know about the severity of bottles and teeth.

Yeah, I think I'll try it and see what happens.  I don't know why it never occurred to be before.

  • My pedi also said to drop bottles if possible after 1 year.  We dropped them as we switched to WCM and used up my frozen stash (had to wean for surgery and cycling for FET).  I never bothered trying BM in a sippy before a year though, I figured when he was ready to transition he would and it took about 3 weeks to go completely to WCM.

Yep, water in a sippy.  He's never had that in a bottle.  Just the 3 bottles of pumped BM a week before his afternoon nap.
