Moby wrap vs. Ring sling

To me the moby looks really complicated and kind of restricting for the baby. The ring sling looks more versatile for different situations and baby looks more comfy but I dont get how the fabric doesn't slip in the rings. For anyone who has used either, what are the pros and cons?

Re: Moby wrap vs. Ring sling

  • The Moby really is not that complicated at all. Once you practice tying it a few times, you'll never forget how. It's actually pretty simple. You want the wrap to be restrictive when your baby is a newborn. Remember, he/she has no core strength - you or the wrap has to hold them. The Moby does a good job of this, and it is very comfortable to wear.

That said, I wish that I had a ring sling also. While tying the Moby is not hard, it does take longer to put on. My DD does not like to wait to be held, plus, it is not ideal to put on in a parking lot if you are out and about.  Also, the Moby has a lot of fabric which makes it hot (well, hotter, you're going to be warm with a baby strapped to you).

A ring sling goes on fast. The rails (top & bottom edges) stay tight enough for safety, though I've been told you have to make adjustments regularly. The ring sling is not as comfortable as the Moby, as it's only on one shoulder, as opposed to the weight of the baby being distributed across both.  I still wish I had one. Once DD has better head control, I'll be shopping for one. She's outgrown the cradle hold, but isn't really ready to be upright on her own.

  • I was not patient enough to learn the Moby and ended up never really using it. I also never tried the ring sling, but...

I am an Ergo fan all around.  In the beginning you can get an infant insert, and the Ergo can be used up to 45 pounds.  I now, at almost six months, can wear it with baby on my back.  It barely feels like I'm carrying anything even though he's 18 pounds.

  • I don't like the Moby (would rather have a non-stretchy wrap that will last into toddlerhood) but I love my ring sling & Ergo. The RS is easy to adjust & doesn't slip. I wore him in it from 3 days old tummy to tummy with his legs froggied. Once he could really support himself I started slinging him on my hip. I reach for the Ergo more now since he's huge and it's more evenly distributed across my shoulders.

  • I had a moby, a ring sling, and an Ergo.  I only used my Moby twice.  It never felt secure and was a giant PIA to put on.  When DD was small I loved how quick it was to get the ring sling on and her in it.  As she got older and bigger I preferred the Ergo.

  • I hated my Moby and need to sell it. Used it twice too hot because of all the fabric, but I have friends who loved theirs. I picked up a Baby Bjorn at a garage salefor super cheap so I'll try that this time around, although I'd really like an Ergo. We bought and returned one with my first because he just didn't like being in it. Not every child likes every carrier.
  • I am a carrier addict lol. I hated the moby w DS1. I got a ring sling and I loved it w DS1 and used it until he was around a year for quick hip carries. DS2 is 3 weeks and I love it for him too. Very easy to use and much cooler. I would recommend an ergo for when baby is older and you want to wear for a longer time. I have a maya wrap ring sling. It's nice bc it has a padded shoulder and pocket for your stuff.

  • Never liked the moby. I have a mya wrap that I adore, and is so easy. My LO is crazy about it.
  • The moby is better for the newborn stage imo. I felt more secure with her in there until she got better head control because it snuggles them up so tightly. It is a PITA to put on, though, and not really feasible to put on when you're out and about. I'd get a used one, usually you can easily find one for $10-15 (check a consignment sale or craigslist), it's worth that much for the first month or so of their life.

I have a ring sling, have since before she was born, but it didn't feel supportive enough to me when she was young and I was afraid she'd slip and smother herself when she was tiny. I felt I needed to pay so much attention when she was in it it wasn't worth it, whereas the moby I didn't have to be so focused. Now she's older and I just haven't gotten into the swing of it, but I need to because it is so easy to put on. That's the appealing part to me. It doesn't seem super comfy for either of us, but more comfy than just holding her, especially when she falls asleep at the breast but dosn't want to be put down.

My favorite is my mei tai. Easier to put on and comfortably lasts longer than the moby, better weight distribution and more secure for a young baby than the ring sling.

  • never loved all the wrapping of the moby, i am a baby k'tan fan. it wears the same way as the wrap - soft, cozy, secure - but is much easier to use. one shoulder slings always ended up hurting my neck and back, so i needed the support of two shoulders like the k'tan/wrap style or structured. i just like the soft cotton carriers without buckles...
