Refrying that dead beaten chicken.

So on my FB wall I've seen a couple (literally two) of my friends "like" a page about not voting for Obama, but not campaigning specifically for anyone else. Just no Obama. I clicked it to see what the liking was about.

One of the link headlines "Like if you agree with Herman Cain that the Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day was a big win for free speech."

I didn't read the article but I'm kind of scratching my head. 16,612 people liked it. So freedom of speech is celebrated and defended no matter how hateful the message. Awesome. I'm all for freedom of speech but c'mon.

I'm not surprised. I meant to phrase this as a debate topic. I gave up. meh.

  • Freedom of Speech:  It does not mean what you think it means.

    (That's the general "you")

    Also:

Freedom of Speech:  It doesn't mean you get to spout off hateful rhetoric because you think the Constitution says you can.

It sucks that my Canadian friends understand this concept but Americans don't.

(Again, not talking about you, cyn)

I might copy and paste this to my wall. Without the parenthesis and the canadian statement haha.

Well, you can. But that doesn't mean it's consequence free! Now, slander (like saying a gay person is a pedophile just because they're gay) is a different story. But if you have an opinion, no matter how stupid it might be, freedom of speech means that yes, you can say what you think.

Not really.  It was originally meant as freedom of speech with regards to the government.  It's morphed into the right to be able to walk up to a gay person in the middle of the street and call them a "f--" and tell them that they're going to hell because God hates teh geighs.

Yet another reason why the Constitution is not really as living of a document as the scholars claim it is.

I don't think you fully understand it.

The freedom of speech is the freedom to say what you want with out the government coming after you for it.  Its why the KKK can get away with the awful hateful stuff that they do.  The same for Westboro Baptist.( Please don't read that as approval of those groups, because I do think they are a hateful bunch of Excuses for people)

I had to listen to the Dixie Chicks blather on about how much they hated President Bush.  and they were protected, under the first ammendment.

I think that if the cities of Boston and Chicago prevent CFA from building their business in those cities, their first amendment right will have been violated. But that is speculation on my part.

  •

Freedom of Speech is supposed to protect the people from the government.

Freedom of Speech is not the right to be a complete jerk to your fellow man.

  • The funniest part of the CFA "Freedom of Speech" thing?

The person the pro-CFA people are constantly bringing into the argument would not support Cathy's stance.

    You know who that is?

    Jesus.

  • First Amendment:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

    ******************************

To me, that reads that the government can't censor your opinions/thoughts/speech.

No where in that paragraph does it say "You can say anything you want to anyone without fear of any retribution whatsoever."
