Parenting after a Loss

Intro......Late! Very Late... and a q?

Hi everyone, Im sure most of you dont remember me. I was active on TTCAL a while ago, and I was a little active on PGAL, but mostly lerked. Then my father in law passed unexpectedly when I was 31w and I havent really posted since then, the loss was very hard as DH and I were very close with his father. He was the first one we told about our BFP. :(

I have been learking around,

Anyways I had my daughter on June 18th after 33hours of labor. I wanted to go med free (like a lot of us!) I was having back labor with contrax every two min and the lasted one min! So, no suprise,  I caved after 16 hours because I was only dialated to 3!!!! I knew I had a long way yet to go and I couldnt make it with out some help, so I got the Epi. I had a 3rd degree tear, but recovery has been great! Way easer then I thought! and DD is amazing! She is so happy almost all the time and sleeps 5 and a half hours in a row almost every night! One night last week she slept 7.5 hrs!

I feel so blessed, but I wish my father in law could have met her, he was so happy she was comming!

My Q- MIL watched DD today when I went grocery shopping (I was gone one hr.) and it was time for DD to eat. Well she eat 6 1/2 oz of pumped milk! she is EBF and will be 7 weeks monday. It seems like a lot to eat all at once. Have any of you had this happen?  Could it be that growth spirt? She is normaly a big eater, she will nurse for a half hr every two hours during the day. We give her one bottle a day and she normaly eats 4-5 oz. Im just not sure what is normal.

Thanks for having me back! I look forward to being around more!

  • Congrats, your DD is gorgeous!

As for your question, that does *seem* like a lot but when you are breastfeeding you don't monitor the amount she takes in. I wouldn't worry too much about it unless she seems hungry after feeding, is not gaining weight properly, or isn't having enough wet diapers. Also- babies will eat more or less at different times. So maybe she will eat 7 oz then only 2 oz at the next feed.

Also, it's wonderful you have a great sleeper- but sleep patterns change. I wasn't aware of the 4 month wakeful and my wonderful sleeping baby went from 6 hour stretch at night to waking every hour and a half. Doesn't mean yours will have it, but I wish someone had warned me it could happen.

  • Congrats and welcome!

There is a great article on Kelly Mom about bottle feeding breastfed babies that I printed and shared with our nanny and my mother (the only 2 who have fed LO other than us) and it really helped them understand that BF babies can easily be overfed (with the best of intentions).

The Kelly Mom site is great all-around for breastfeeding information.  Bookmark it as a fave now for ease of reference later!

  • Congrats and welcome! That does seem like quite a bit for that age. DD rarely had more than 3-4oz the whole time she was bottle fed. But, every baby is different. Since it was just once, I probably wouldn't worry about it. I hope she continues to be a good sleeper for you! Things change ... a lot.

  • Congrats on your dd. Sorry for the loss of your FIL. Breastfeeding babies will eat more out of bottle than they do from the breast. I would try putting less breastmilk in bottle for your mil and send extra breastmilk in second bottle.

  • Congrats on you little one. I'm sorry for the loss of your father in law.

That does seem like a lot for a newborn. Could be a growth spurt or maybe she just ate that much because it was being offered to her.

  • Thank you all for the warm welcome! DD get one bottle of pumped milk every other day and when dh or I feed her she drinks 3-4oz. So I left mil with a 5oz bottle, knowing that should be more then enough! DD wakes eats plays the sleeps, repeat all day long. So after mil fed her they "played" (if u can call it that with a bh) then I think she was tired and fussy so mil got in my freezer stash and gave her more! After I heard this it made me think I'm not giving her enough! So I'm happy to hear the eating so much is abnormal. Thank you all!
