How many pairs of underwear...

Ok, I know the "what to bring to the hospital" post has been regurgitated ad nauseum, but I keep seeing hospital bag lists that include 10-12 pairs of granny panties on them... I know there will be lots of blood and bodily fluids flowing, but if I'm in the hospital 2-4 days, do I really need a dozen pairs of panties?

How many are you bringing?

Thanks!

Re: How many pairs of underwear...

  • OMG! Maybe 3 a day??  I have no idea.  All I know is I have no idea how I'm ever going to pack a hospital bag.  I'm going to need a large suitcase.  LOL!

  • I'm only bringing 2: One to wear home, and one just in case. I plan to make full use of the mesh undies while I'm in the hospital. Last time I wore them home.

  • I wore those mesh undies until the day I was released. I packed 3 pairs for this time.

  • I'd rather have too many than not enough... I know that some hospitals will provide you with their mesh undies or something similar - but I'm all about comfort, so I'd much rather have my own handy and ready to go if needed.

  • I packed 10 "big" underwear and 6 "regular" underwear. I just like to be prepared. What if I bleed a ton? What if I have to stay longer than planned?

I remember with DS I bled a lot on the first day, like dripping on the floor and down my leg bleeding, so I like having extra underwear, and don't have to worry about keeping my clothes clean.

Similarly, I have 7 pjs, despite likely only being there for 2 nights.

ETA: I absolutely 100% despise the mesh underwear from the hospital, so that's why I bring my own.

  • 3 pairs for 3 days/2 nights. I have never bled through a pair of them..just make sure to change your pads frequently. It's not like you will sleep 8hrs and wake up soaked lol. Between the baby and nurses checking on me I had no problem changing them every 2-3hrs. I wore the mesh undies for only a few hours after birth when the heaviest bleeding took place.

  • I was planning on packing 3-4 pairs. The mesh ones suck but I still plan on wearing them for a few hours after the birth when the bleeding is the heaviest. I changed my pad every few hours when in the hospital with DD and never had any bleed through. I also wasn't a "bleeder" according to one of my nurses.

Anytime I travel, I always over pack underwear. It takes up like no room so why not have back up just in case. I delivered Friday night and wore the mesh panties until I showered Saturday morning. I was sent home Sunday afternoon. I only needed 2 pairs but I packed 5.

I was offered to go home Saturday, so I'm hoping I will only stay one night this time. But I'll still pack 5 pairs.

Hmmm I think it may have been you who scared me before... 16 pairs of underwear is intimidating to a FTM... It makes sense to pack more than I think I'll need though.  Thanks!

I totally didn't mean to scare you! I just like to be over prepared. :)

  • Ladies unless you REALLY feel uncomfortable wearing dispoable underwear I would not pack any normal panties for the hospital. At the most pack 1 for your ride home.

They will give you disposable underwear and the huge pads to go in them. You will be bleeding plenty for at least the first week after delivery and you dont want to ruin your underwear. The disposables are great because you just toss them and no need to worry about caring for bloody laundry. If you dont want to wear the thin disposables they provide you can always bring Depends with you.

I brought panties with DD and ended up not wearing them at all except the ride home.

I was in the hospital last week and those things are just as comfortable as any of my undies (at least the ones at that hospital were) :) Plus, I don't have to pay for them OOP :)

  • I'm just bringing a couple pairs, plus some Depends.  I didn't use my panties last time, but I used a couple Depends.  Sure the mesh sucks, but so do ginormous pads.  A dozen seems like overkill to me.

  • I'm planning to bring one pair if I feel like wearing them on the way home. But I'll probably just keep the mesh hospital panties on. I'm not wearing anything but the mesh ones in the hospital. They aren't pretty, but they are seriously comfy and disposable!

  • None - I'm using the mesh ones they provide.  I can throw them away if there is crap on them and they bring more.

  • I will probably take like 5 pairs of maternity undies with me.  I know the first 24 hrs when I still have my catheter in (RCS) I won't be wearing any, and my bleeding settled down quite a bit on day two with my boys.  If I need more, DH will be in and out everyday, he can bring me more.

  • why would you want to ruin your own underwear?  Just use the lovely ones they give you at the hospital.

  • I will probably bring a couple. They put you in mesh underware with a huge pad most of your stay. You won't care about what underware you have on while you are there.

  • I'm using what the hospital gives me, but if I were bringing all my own, maybe 2 a day. They give you pads, it's not like you're just bleeding everywhere. 12 seems excessive.

THIS. You don't want to ruin your own panties. You don't want to spend money on some just for the hospital. Chances are, the ones you have won't accomodate all the crap you will be stuffing in them anyway. Don't over think this one, please.
