Babies: 9 - 12 Months

XP: Daycare mums and nap transition

DD is in a family daycare 3 days a week.  SHe is youngest by 6 months and all others take one nap in afternoon.  DD takes an am nap around 9:30 and then her other nap around 1:30 and this schedule has been working well for a few months.THe last week or so at daycare she has been taking later naps (10am/2pm or even 3pm).  She'll still sleep, sometimes it ends up a short nap.  I think she is just too excited to sleep but I don't think she's ready for one nap yet and even if she is I'd like a few days to try and help her transition.DCP is happy to try and keep offering the two naps which we've asked her to do. I am not sure what else to do and I don't want DD on a totally different schedule at home versus at daycare.  I think with teething, pulling up etc she may just be struggling a bit and may go back to a happy medium in another week or so?Anyone else going through this?  I know at some centers they move all toddlers to one nap around 12 months but I"m hoping we can stretch it a bit.

  • DD will not nap at school to save her life! LOL! At home she is an awesome napper/sleeper.  At school though she just won't nap.  I honestly don't think they've done all they can to try and keep her on her schedule though.  There are 6 kids total in a fairly small room and there is a lot going on around her.  Right now she is napping once for about an hour-ish which is not her usually 2 - 2hour naps.  I don't think she is ready for just one nap.
I hope you are able to figure out your LOs schedule.

  • imo, 10 months is too young to drop a nap.  I'd wait until at least a year for that.

  • DS isn't in daycare, so I can't comment from that perspective.

However, DS (just turned 11m) and has been kind of weird with naps, so I can comment on that. I can usually get him to nap in the late morning, then again early afternoon, but he sometimes does one looong nap (3 hrs). When he only has one nap, it makes bedtime crazy, either because he's crazy tired, or because he's crazy awake because he slept too long.

I would try to keep with the two naps a little longer. It might just be an off week.

  • Thx.  I agree it is too soon (she'll be 11 months on Monday) to switch and I'm going to work with DCP to keep at it even if the 2 naps run a bit later.  Since it is a family daycare there is no real rush and though it will be easier on provider once DD is on same as others schedule I think she is happy to keep with DDs needs and just feels bad the naps end up short or late or both.

After all we know we can't force the babies to sleep -- just give them the best opportunity and hope.
