Auntie, social empathy program ?

I asked you awhile back about a social empathy program.  Could you give me the name of it?  My son is almost 6 and is having a ROUGH time at daycare this summer.  DH is finally agreeing to a developmental ped eval.  My heart is sad, but hopeful this will put us on the right path again.

Re: Auntie, social empathy program ?

  • he's going into first grade.  Academically he's above average.  He struggled with his social skills in Kindergarten.  He was in people's personal space, seeking negative attention, having a hard time initiating in a group to get other's to play.  He received speech, a social skills group, and a smaller social skills group.  He made good progress with his social skills according to his teacher and psychologist.  DH wanted to wait on the developmental pedi as they're just "looking for things to label him."  DS has a history of seizures and is on medication that slows his brain down. This summer he's had more of the same behaviors, but to a larger degree.  He wants to hang out with the younger kids.  He's teasing constantly.  Rewards, punishments/consequences, rationalizations are not working.  When he gets in trouble he just worries about how long he's in time out.  He doesn't really show remorse for what he's done.  He can tell us outside of the moment what the expectations are that we have for him, but in the moment is impulsive.  His teasing has gotten unsafe.  Today he was pouring water over the babies heads, pulling on the slip and slide with kids on it and slamming doors.  He literally had to be at the babysitter's side or he would be teasing.  It was all day.  It hasn't been just today.  He has good days and bad.  He's going to be 6 this month but needs more supervision than his age due to his behaviors.  He's not trying to be mean, he just really doesn't seem to understand how his actions impact others.  The babysitter told us today we need to find someone else for the rest of the summer :(  We are at a loss on how to help him.
