Thoughts on just doing HCG trigger shot to get pregnant?

our story:

Got pregnant in '08 first shot and had a healthy/uneventful pregnancy and have a 4 year old son. When trying for #2 we just could not get pregnant again for over a year. Had HSG test and the dye sort of pockets once it comes out of the tube on one side. RE said this meant there was scar tissue on this side and a blockage. Odd since I never had an infection, C-Section, etc. We tried TI, Clomid + TI, Clomid +IUI and still nothing. RE suggested moving over to IVF b/c the thought the damage was probably worse than we were seeing.

Became pregnant with twins on first IVF but sadly they were born too soon at 18 weeks :( Had a hysteroscopy post loss to remove scar tissue build up and they found a very mild case of endometritis (a very mild inflammation of 1/3 of the uterus) RE made the biggest deal out of it - saying I could have trouble carrying a child at all. We did a FET and it failed. Tried a fresh IVF cycle and it also failed. RE recommended trying IVF again or a surrogate. I've had a child naturally and gotten pregnant within the year through IVF so a surrogate being mentioned was insane to me.

Went for a second opinion and this new RE thinks my HSG test looks FINE and that I am a normal, healthy woman. She said the dye pocketing is seen all the time and its b/c I was laying down. She thinks I can get preg on my own but suggested IUI's for better odds/timing.

I'm not really ready to jump back in just yet to all the treatments...ESPECIALLY if I can, in fact, get preg on my own. I heard the odds increase very slightly with IUI's. She suggested coming in tomorrow and at least checking if I was ready to OV and then giving me the trigger HCG shot and then I can just have sex with my husband, no IUI.

Thoughts on doing this? Does the shot just guarantee the egg actually drops? I'm just wondering if it's worth it. I am interested in seeing if I am ready to OV to ensure good timing.

Side Note: I am getting a 3rd opinion on Monday since the two RE's have totally opposite views on my case.

  • I don't have much of a comment, but good luck with the 3rd opinion.  I'm interested to hear if that doc agrees or comes up with a happy medium for you.  Good luck!

  • I can only offer up my bff's story.  She went to an RE and did one cycle of femera and trigger they monitored her and was clockwork day 14 ovulation.  Well, they gave her the drugs for the 2nd month when she got her bfn.  She forgot to schedule the monitoring u/s and then decided to just do it on her own so she took the femara and then did the trigger on the same cd as the month before and had a successful pregnancy.  NOW, I know without a doubt she was lucky as hell this worked.  (her RE wasn't happy about what she did to put it mildly)

I had to be monitored and they didn't trigger me till cd17.  As long as you are monitored it could work...good luck.

  • I don't think it would hurt. The good thing about follie checks and trigger shots is you know your timing is perfect. I have never had luck with an OPK. I would try it.

  • First off, I'm so sorry for your loss. As for the trigger, I don't think the shot 100 percent guarantees that you will ovulate, but most will ovulate with the trigger. I did 3 round of Clomid with trigger and TI and I'm still not pregnant. I normally O on my own but I was put on clomid due to having a late/weak ovulation. I don't think it would hurt for you to go ahead with the trigger and T.I. Good Luck with your decision!
