Separation anxiety

So we have separation anxiety in full swing.  The only time DS is away from me or dad is when we go to the gym together, so for about an hour and a half a few days a week.  We have had my sister baby-sit occasionally for a date night, and he is fine with that.

When he first started going, he had fun, played and never fussed.  Now he has gotten progressively more resistant to going.  Yesterday, he started crying the minute we walked in to the gym.  He doesn't always cry the whole time, but does cry a good bit of it.

He is a super happy and not fussy baby at home, so it just breaks my heart.  DH thinks we need to keep taking him to let him get used to it.  What are your thoughts?

Re: Separation anxiety

  • I think that it is a phase with getting older, my son has been in and out of the separation anxiety phase but I think that sticking to the routine is good. I think it's good to consistently show DS that when you are gone for a little bit, it's ok to be sad but you will be back and everything will be just fine.

  • It helped my son to bond with a couple of special stuffed animals and toys too, we made a special build-a-bear that he really bonded with so that helped when he was really having a hard time if we were leaving him with his grandma or something
  • That is a good suggestion. So far he doesn't have any toys that he is particularly fond of.
