Planned Parenthood?

I just called my insurance to make sure my IUD (Paragard) will be covered in September (when I scheduled the appointment).  I was SHOCKED to hear that they don't cover IUD's - especially because I work for a pharmaceutical company and USUALLY you carry 'decent' insurance.

I have been reading online that you can contact planned parenthood.  Does anyone know if going this route is any cheaper than paying out of pocket?  Am I allowed to go there considering I have health insurance?

I am trying to look at every viable option because I know my husband is going to have a tough time agreeing to spend $800 on a device when he thinks one of us should have surgery and I am not 100% sure I am done having kids.  ARGHHHH.

I should also note that BC pill is 100% covered, but I can not take hormones due to issues with depression and anxiety.

  • I haven't done this but I heard it's quite a bit cheaper. Some ladies from my mommy group on FB have and I believe it's sliding scale as well. In some states, I think you can also go to the county health department for birth control.

  • The total that was billed to my insurance last week for Paraguard was $1974!  If Planned Parenthood offers it, it has to be cheaper than that.  I would definitely look into that.

  • I am a Planned Parenthood clinic manager. Here is the deal. Most of the PP clinics are title x funded so that means birth control and office exams are slided on a sliding fee scale based off of US poverty guidelines. We do not require proof of your income, we go on the honor system. It will as you what your yearly total household income is and # of dependants supported by it. People fall anywhere from 0-100% off there services. Paraguard in my KS clinic is $648 for paraguard and $100 insertion fee at full price, you will also have a 6-12 week follow up appt, but that is included in the price.

Like I said most clinics are title x funded but not all are, for example 6/8 in my region are title x. So when you call your local PP ask if they are title x funded and slide there fees.

  • I went for the pill when I was younger. I made 26k so they charged me $26.00.
