A question for FET ladies...

I am really worried (as always) that this will be a BFN. I am trying to prepare myself for what I will do and I am hoping to go right into a FET in August. If I can't do a FET in August, I probably will not be able to cycle again for quite a while.

Anyway, I am wondering if anyone out there ever did a FET immediately after a fresh IVF. Also, what was your protocol for a FET? I really need to count pennies with this one and I would like to know what to expect in terms of meds costs.

TIA! :)

Re: A question for FET ladies...

  • We've only had one FET and it was months after our fresh cycle. I think that most doctors are willing to do FETs back to back, but hopefully you won't need to find out.

My FET was pretty natural with some supplements for lining just to ensure it was extra cushy. No injections at all and if I could do FETs from here on out I most definitely would. It seems easier to feel slightly numb to as opposed to the injects, ER, etc.

Be cautiously optimistic! Hang in there. I truly hope this works for you.

  • My successful FET was immediately after my fresh cycle BFN, but i had to do a BCP first for suppression.

I started BCP with the AF post-FET, took those for 3 weeks, then spent 3 weeks prepping lining.  So I transferred ~ 6 weeks after my BFN.  And like PP, I definitely preferred my FET.  Med costs for me OOP were around $800.  Most of the drugs used (like patches, BCP) are indicated for things outher than fertility, so I had insurance coverage for those even though I was OOP for IF.

Just as an aside -- I was sure my FET failed.  I didn't have any different symptoms on my successful cycle than I did on my busts.  So hoping this cycle is it for you!

  • I did a natural fet, so no meds (just supps and antibiotics/steroids at transfer).  So maybe 1004 total in meds (refills included).

  • The sort of classic medicated FET is Lupron : E2 support : Progesterone, but you can do an unmedicated FET or antagonist FET  (E2+antagonist : Progesterone) to shave off some time off the cycle (from 2 m cycles to 1 m cycle). Our FET came after a DE cycle, so no stimmed ovaries to recover from. Good luck, hoping you wont need to do a FET at all.

(If you're doing BA or Lovenox, etc you'd do that for the FET as well, and antibiotics and steroids as per your clinc's practices.)

My FET wasn't immediatley after our failed cycle, but our proptocol was identical to Kim's.  BCP's, Lupron, Estrace, and PIO.  Much easier on my pocket and my body.

Sending lots of luck your way!

  • I just started my FET cycle yesterday.  It's been 5 months since my fresh cycle.  I did BCP for several weeks to suppress my ovaries.  I'm doing Estradiol and Vivelle Dots (also Estrogen) and will start PIO toward the end of next week.  And of course there is an antibiotic and Valium for the FET.  So far, it's easy.    Total med cost was about $600.

After more than 2 years of fertility treatments, FET did the trick!
IVF March 2012 - BFP! - Severe OHSS = 8 days in the hospital in kidney failure
    No heartbeat at 10w6d
    FET August 27,2012 = BFP!

  • Thanks, ladies!

Even if they want me on BCPs for a while, I think a FET is much more doable during the school year. I know I sound like I am obsessing, but I really do only get two personals a year...
