Tummy sleeping/face planting?

So we are transitioning from RNP to crib, tonight will be the 4th night and she's been sleeping better on her tummy. I don't like it but her ped says its ok as long as she gets there herself. But I have been noticing that sometimes she sleeps with her face planted right in the mattress. Anyone else's LO do this? Nothing is in the crib with her except her paci.

  • As disconcerting as it is, she's probably ok sleeping that way.  She has enough coordination to move her head if she can't breathe.  Babies have little pug noses meant to help them breathe while smooshed against a boob, so my inclination is to say she's probably ok.

Amazing.. DS does this EXACTLY.... like he sleeps directly face down.  I freaked out several times and called the pedi and then brought it up again at his 6-month wellbaby check-up.

The pedi said that as long as he gets himself there (i.e. you put her to sleep on her back and she rolls), and once he can roll and move his head, there isn't much to worry about and you'll make yourself crazy trying to reposition them all the time.  I would turn DS' head and he'd go right back.

Good to know! My DD was supposed to have her 6 month well baby today but it got rescheduled for the end of this month. Kind of a bummer bc I wanted to ask about all this. Plus she will be over 7 mo then. Sigh.

Just chiming in to say my DD has done this, too, and it's awful - so hard to relax! She recently fell asleep while nursing and her face fell into my boob and she jerked herself awake, so that helped me feel a little better that she has control of that now. I'd still prefer she didn't do it!

I have a face planter too! She also sleeps in corners. I actually find it pretty cute -- but she's a steady crawler and moves all the time so I'm not worried about suffocation. Once they can move, all bets are off.

Mine doesn't crawl yet, but on her tummy she can turn 360 degrees and sort of scoot. Last night she slept in the same position all night but randomly moved her face side to side and the occasional face plant. I checked on her a few times. I'm working on not being neurotic about it but I guess I just have to get used to it since she only just started tummy sleeping on Sunday night, before that she was in the RNP at night.

  • Both of my kids have been belly sleepers, and have been known to sleep face in the mattress.
