Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

Misoprostol instructions?? (TMI??)

I had decided to go the medication route and I was prescribed Misoprostol. The directions state to take the pill vaginally. Is this correct? Anyone else use this method to pass the baby? I'm sorry if this is too much. I am extremely frightened but I wanted to pass the baby as naturally as possible before I return to teaching class. My body still has not had any spotting or indication of no life even though it has been almost four weeks. My husband's birthday is Friday and I just feel horrible and lost. He took the day off to tend to me tomorrow. He is such a blessing. If you took meds and also had to take them vaginally, please reply by a simple yes. My doctor did not mention this when it was prescribed or when we talked on the phone. I just assumed it was an oral pill. Thank you.

Re: Misoprostol instructions?? (TMI??)

  • Yes. That's how I took them.  My doctor said you get more side effects taking them orally. Good luck. Sorry for your loss.

  • I had a few rounds of misoprostol a few weeks back, and my doctor said that while one could take them orally, they are more effective when taken vaginally or buccally (placed between your cheek and gumline and held until it dissolves, followed by drinking water and swallowing any leftover pill paste).

I tried one dose vaginally, and the pills that I inserted as close to my cervix as possible never dissolved; I found them still whole the next morning. Your mileage may vary, of course, but I wanted to mention that.  I took the rest of the doses buccally, and am starting another round tonight in hopes of finally being done with this.

I'm not sure if you like to read up on various experiences with medications, but I do, and I found this woman's blog post (and subsequent comments) to be helpful.  It's nice to know what to expect - trigger warning though, she has pictures of her baby up on her blog, and I know some people may find that upsetting.  (https://babyburnham.blogspot.ca/2008/12/my-experience-with-cytotec-misoprostol.html

I hope your misoprostol experience goes well and is successful!

This actually helps. I like to know what the worst is that I can expect. I am terrified, but I know that the experience is different for everyone. Either way, it won't be pleasant, but at least I know what I can expect and that my hubby will be with me each step of the way.  Please pray for a fast and painless experience!

  • I took the medicine vaginally and it worked for me. Make sure you push it up as high and close to the cervix as you can. Sorry for your loss.

I read this last night, but I wasn't able to post.

I used misoprostol- and it didn't work the first day (they didn't dissolve at all).   And then I was sick from the morphine. So I waited two days & took it again.  one of the people who commented on the blog linked above said to slightly moisten the pills prior to insertion... and that helped with the second dose.  I also did not use anything stronger than advil with the second dose.   The pain wasn't horrendous-  except that I also became constipated & that pain was the worst I've ever felt.  I had more cramps on day 2 than I did on day 1, even though I passed the fetus & gestational sac on day 1. I wrote about my experience here: earlier misoprostol post

I also had a heating pad- which helped on day 2.  And drank LOTS of fluids.

Good luck & I hope it's going as well as can be expected.

  • I also took vaginally, its.... scary to put them up there, and as someone mentioned moisten your finger, i think it helps it dissolve better.  I used a disposable rubber glove (a medical glove, i keep them on hand to cut up meat).  This part is way TMI: I was able for both of my miscarriages to scoop out the fetus from the toilet,  i was shocked i found it, but i used a small strainer and got it out.  It was comforting to write a note for the baby and bury it in the yard.

Definitley use the heating pad, i needed on my back.  I was also on percocet and motrin, so I'm not sure how much it would have hurt without it, but it was a nagging pain, nothing that would make me more scared than i was.

The first time i took it is was easy, got them up there, everything started, passed and i had 11 guests for dinner the next night.  I passed it all within a few days.

I'm not going to lie, its a terrible thing to have to do, but you have your wonderful husband to help you through, as i did.

    Lots of hugs....
