1st Trimester

Coke during pregnancy

the drink...not the drug LOL

I was told 200mg of caffeine each day is okay for baby, and I just looked up that regular Coca-Cola Classic has 35mg...I cannot get through the day without having just 1 coke, anyone else having the same problem? Anyone's doctors told you to cut it out completely?

Re: Coke during pregnancy

  • My doctor said caffeine is fine in moderation.  I miss my diet coke, but I have a complete aversion to all soda right now!

  • you can have like 5 cokes, or 2 cups of coffee and be fine.

  • My doctor told me to have it every once in a while, because of the sugar.  I am at a high risk of diabetes (all 4 of my grandparents have it and my mom had gd) so I have to limit sugar.  Although sipping a coke seemed to help with m/s.

  • Well, since you can have 200mgs, you can have about 4-5 Cokes a day.

  • I had a friend of mine, who is a nurse, freak out at me when she thought I was drinking coffee (it was pregnancy tea)...but I'm sure that some caffeine won't do any harm.

  • I would just limit your coke.  I have either a 1/2 caf coffee or 1 diet coke a day.  I use to be a coffee hound, so it's been hard!
  • There's always caffeine free regular Coke, too!
  • Coke is fine.  I found that it actually really HELPED when my m/s was really bad.  I think the carbonation helps or something.  It made my tummy feel way better.

  • well, since coke only has 35mg of caffeine, i think it's safe to say that if you have more than 1 coke a day your baby will not have 3 heads, 6 arms and 4 legs.

    enjoy!

  • I have 1-2 cokes a day, depending on how I'm feeling.  I get terrible headaches and sometimes a can of coke is the only thing that can get rid of it.  I'm actually less concerned about the caffeine in the coke than I am about the huge amount of sugar that it contains.  My doctor said not to worry about it and that one or two a day should be fine.
  • I didn't drink alot of soda to begin with, but a freind of mine gets alll shakey if she doesn't have caffiene. Her doctor said it was ok as long as she didn't over-do it b/c cutting it out would actually be more of a shock, and more harmful, to her body thatn the caffiene.
  • one a day will not hurt you or the baby. In moderation its fine

  • My doctor told me to avoid it altogether in the 1st trimester

  • While we're on the topic of coke (or diet coke in my case), I thought you were supposed to stay away from Diet Coke because of the aspartame (sp?).  I love diet coke and sometimes drink it as a treat, but have been avoiding it completely because of all the crap in it.  Aspartame ok or no?

  • Glad to see this post because I've never been a soda person. I usually always opt for the non carbonated beverage option but I got some Coke on a whim and it was like the best tasting drink to me.

I felt so guilty drinking it b/c of all the flack soda, coffee, caffiene, etc. gets but now I feel better. I still will opt to not drink it but I'm glad to know it can be my once in a while "guilty pleasure".

  • just another unhealthy thing about cola drinks:

The high levels of phosphoric acid in cola drinks pulls calcium from your bones and increases your risk of kidney stones and low bone density.

take it easy on the coke!

  • I avoided Coke during the 1st trimester, but now I have one once or twice a week. My midwife says it is fine for me to have some caffine, I just need to drink extra water to make up for it.
