Knowing when to go up a diaper size?

So, my LO is about 9 and a half pounds. We've been using Pampers Swaddlers in the newborn size, but they're supposed to be used for babies 6-10 pounds, and we're getting close to the upper end, but the size 1s (8-14 pounds) are so ginormous! It doesn't help that he's long and skinny, so the newborns fit well at the waist, but are starting to not cover everything as well, if you catch my drift. The size 1s are long enough, but they bunch so much between the legs.

Any recs? Should I just stick with the weight ranges on the packages, and when he hits 10 pounds, move him up? Anyone else have an extremely long, skinny baby (he's already grown two inches since birth!) and find something that works for them?

Re: Knowing when to go up a diaper size?

  • My LO has been in size 1 since birth.  He was 8 lbs when he was born and we never used newborn size at all.

    We also use Pampers Swaddlers.

  • I've pretty much ignored the weight ranges and moved up a size when they were starting to leak/explode out of them more than just once in a while.  I ususally found that I moved up well before the weight range would suggest.  If he's not leaking out at all yet, then stick with the newborn size longer.
  • I moved up from newborn to size one once her blowouts went up and out the back of her diaper, way before the weight range on the package. I find huggies size one fits smaller and less bulky between the legs then pampers size one.

  • We use swaddlers my son went into size ones at 9lbs and is 11lbs and getting ready for size 2s. For him the weight really isnt the issue its because he is so long. You can probably getting by using the newborns until you start getting leaks.

  • We also have a long skinny baby and just moved up to the Pampers Swaddlers size 1 which are HUGE!  I thought that the newborns were getting just a little too small in the rear end area so I thought we should move up but it almost seems like we need an in-between size.  I heard that huggies newborns run a little bit bigger than pampers so I may give that a try until we're ready to be fully in size 1's.

  • My LO was 9lbs 10 oz at birth so we only used the NB size briefly. When he started soaking through them, the pedi suggested moving up a size and it worked for us.

My LO is in the size 1 now. We also use the Pampers Swaddlers but I'm going to switch to size 2 soon once I use up the rest of my size 1. I'd rather make the change before he starts soaking through again!

I think you should try out the bigger size and see how it goes especially since you said the NB size are not covering him all the way anymore.

  • The weights on the box are useless.  DD is 11lbs and we're in Up&up size 2 now.  Just switch whenever the smaller size starts leaking or falling off.  Diapers are cheaper per diaper when they are smaller so don't switch up until you really need to.

  • We also use Pampers Swaddlers, and when we switched to 1's I thought they seemed pretty big just like you describe. I decided it was time to switch when DS was leaking pee out of diapers fairly frequently - usually a few a day. I'm guessing he was roughly 8.5 lbs when we switched. The NBs still seemed like they fit fine, but just couldn't absorb as much "output" as what was now needed.

this. We were having blowouts at 3-4 wks and 8lbs, we moved up to size 1. It is big but does the job.

  • I just wait til you can tell its not fitting around his hiney & waist....he's really long but fairly skinny (he was 22 inches at birth idk what he's now since its been 5 weeks since he's been weighed or measured) so I just wait til he starts leaking or having explosions frequently... & when that happens I try to hold out as long as i can til I can finish the pack of diapers that are opened.. but I don't go by weight...i feel like thats just a guideline & every baby is too different to follow the "rule book"
