there is probably already a post about this somewhere but here goes anyway. I had an amnio done on friday, I'm now high risk and even though I'm 24 weeks baby is measuring 20 with no growth in a month. So even though I didn't want an amnio they talked me into it. SO I get a call todday that they expect the results tomorrow at 1 and can I come in at 2 to talk to a genetic counselour....
Not sure what to expect just wondering if this is normal, I kinda figured I would just get a phone call if all was well and a call in if something was wrong. ANd how do you schedule appointments with out results?
To anyone who has experiance with amnio's any help would be very appreciative.
FYI all initial testing came back with very low odds
Re: amnio results
they told me they were looking for an infection that could have stopped her growth or a chromosonal issue that could be effecting her growth...I guess i'm just wondering the usual 'protocol' for amnio results, a phone call or a visit. Every other test has only been a visit if something was wrong, but they insist that they won't know until tomorrow at 1 oclock and we should be there at 2...just seems strange to me
I don't have experience with having an amnio- but I was offered one when my quad screen results came back with a higher risk for downs. We met with a genetic councilor via skype and she basically just explained options (like an amnio) & stuff to us and asked for greater medical history. It was really awesome meeting with her because she was so knowledgeable and we had the time to ask stupid questions and the like. And she got me in quicker for appointments with better specialists, etc.
So, not totally related- but if you're freaking about a councilor, it could be a good meeting for you to get your head around everything.
Hoping you have a good appointment tomorrow and can rest tonight. Sorry for your stress.
Sorry you're going through this. Thinking good thoughts for your appr tomorrow!
I would say a visit is not the norm but since there is something happening whether it have a set diagnosis or not I bet they want to discuss options with you. What they are thinking or wanting to do next.
I also think they did a fish test for you which gives results in about 3-4 days, I did that too but the full amino which looks at all chromosomes takes 10 days. The infection part is quick too, did that with my last pregnancy. They need your amniotic fluid to test but those results should be in too.
When I had my amino done they said that I would get the results in 3 days. This will tell if the baby had downs etc. however, the rest of the chromosome testing would take about three weeks (in order for the cells to grow).
Good luck with everything and keep us posted.
Most doctors WILL call you in to speak with a genetics counselor. There are various reasons. Some doctors prefer it, regardless of the test results, because genetic counselors are trained to break down complicated information specifically for concerned parents.
We didn't have an amnio, but I've had to speak with one, twice. The first time was at our NT scan which came out "perfect," but the doctor seemed to prefer the counselor telling me this so she could also cover information about what they were looking for, what it all means, etc.
The second time, we found two soft markers on her Level II and the counselor had to explain to me that it might not mean anything.
Anyway, if you can help it, try not to let them calling you in affect or compound your worry. It's not foreshadowing.
