C-sections

Too ambitious?

I have just been scheduled for a c-section due to a previous dystocia.  I found that it will be five days before a big festival weekend that we always like to attend and now I am wondering, would it be crazy to think that I could go and walk around for a short while sometime the next weekend?  I have heard that walking helps to heal faster but I definitely don't want to overdo it.  I have no experience with what to expect after a c-section so I was hoping someone could tell me if I am nuts or not.  :)

Re: Too ambitious?

  • There is no way in hell I'd be out at an event walking at 5 days PP. I was discharged at 4 days PP, so my first couple days at home? We were just learning our routine, and nursing like crazy.

It took 7 days (from when I got home, I was in the hosptial for 4 nights after birth) for me to go outside the house to walk. I walked to the end of my block, got winded and went back.

  • I get discharged 5 days PP, and while I'm pretty much back to normal, no way would I go to a "festival"...........

  • I had my c section on thurs evening after a 24hr labor that was not progressing. Today is day 5 and although I went to target for medications etc and actually feel ok there is no way I would be goin to an event today.

  • I agree.  A quick trip to the store or something small, sure...a festival?  No way!  And I also wouldn't want my baby out around that many strangers at 5 days old nor would I want to leave him with someone so soon.

  • I'm of the thought "get up and move around to heal faster" but I still wouldn't do a fair/festival within a week of a c/s. Nope, nope, nope.

  • I was released 2 days PP and had a fairly easy recovery.  I did trips to the store and whatnot soon after but I would not have gone to a festival that soon.  Walking is good but I couldn't walk as fast as normal or for as long as I would like.  That + exhaustion + tons of people in the heat sounds like a bad idea.

  • I didn't even get released from the hospital until 5 days pp. I don't think I left the house for the first 10 days or so.

  • You might feel fine (I felt great 5 days PP), but I wouldn't take LO to a festival that soon. I'm imagining crowds, noise, dirt....

Also, if you plan on breastfeeding, that's not going to be an ideal place to work on forming good breastfeeding habits.

  • At one week pp, I walked (with ds in a Moby wrap - it was Dec) around a local festival. I took it easy. I think it's do able, just depends on how everything goes.

festival doesn't mean rides or craziness necessarily..with my son in the Moby wrap, and my jacket zipped up around him, I don't think anyone every knew there was a baby in there! I probably just looked fat Smile

I went to a chocolate festival, so it was all about food. I sat when I needed to, and breastfed him in public, even. Much easier than BF my 8 mo old in public these days!

Staying in all the time just made me feel depressed and blah. I think you go out one day, chilll for a few, then go out again. I know it helped me.

  • Yes. Too ambitious. A c/s is major surgery and needs to be treated as such.

  • I was released 3 days PP and my son 10 days PP... I had a great and easy recovery. I'm sure I could have walked around a festival, but I wouldn't have enjoyed it. I'd pass.
  • Thank you all for the helpful advice! I honestly do not know what to expect so this gives me a good idea of what I will be able to handle.  I appreciate all of the input!
  • No way, no how.

  • No.  Not at all would I even consider this.  I've had several friends split open their incisions from doing too much around the house.  It sets back healing significantly.  At two weeks PP I went for a walk to a neighborhood park just a few blocks away and it made me bleed like crazy.  I regretted it. This is one year you should think about sitting it out.

  • I hosted my son's 2nd birthday party at about 7 days pp, so there was a lot of running around and chasing toddlers everywhere and I felt fine.  I was discharged 3 days pp and had an amazing recovery.  I think I could go to a festival, but I wouldn't count on it because everyone is different.

Based on my last experience, yes, you're nuts.

  • I started walking around my neighborhood the day I cane home (48hrs pp). At 6 days pp I cooked, baked and hosted a party for 13 adults and 6 children, plus my 2. There was definitely a lot of running around and being on my feet with all that. I felt totally fine. I think my biggest concern with the festival would be the heat and sweat. If you do decide to go, go slow and keep a pad over your incision so it stays dry.

  • Getting up and walking short distances at 5 days PP would be helpful for recovery. I did short walks around the block and ran to the store to pick up a few things. After about 10 minutes or so of walking, that was about it.

Walking around a festival would absolutely be overdoing it. I would skip it. There's always next year.
