Nanny rates

We live in the suburbs of Wash, DC (MD side).  I realize that this is geographically dependent, but I'd love some general input (or suggestions on where to look):

For those with a full time live out nanny, how much is s/he paid? (Hourly or weekly or monthly, depending on what you do) And is that for just childcare or does it include any housekeeping/cleaning?  Do you pay his/her taxes as well with 1099's?  Recommendations for where to look into these topics?

Re: Nanny rates

  • I don't know your area specifically, but my best friend paid $625/week for 8-5pm, no housework, for one child (infant).  I thought this was high but as I'm looking around now for someone for 2 days a week, most are looking for $15/hour - which is for our baby most of the day and the other 2 kids after school.
  • Oh and I meant to note that my best friend is in MD but suburbs of Baltimore - in Owings Mills.

  • My DH's friend lives in Gaithersburg and they had a nanny several years ago who made 30 grand a year, which is around 15 an hour.  She also had some benefits.  I looked two years ago in Baltimore when I was pregnant with DD and the average was 15 to 20 an hour.  I know someone who nannies for a family of two and makes 25 and hour.

  • I live in the Columbia/Ellicott City area of MD and pay $12/hr for my 3 month old DD.  When I posted the ad on care.com saying I was going to pay $12/hr I got over 50 applicants, so I don't think I was underpaying.  My nanny doesn't do any cooking or laundry, but she cleans all my DD's bottles and picks up her toys at the end of the day.

Care.com has a good calculator on going rates based on zip code.  You don't need to be a member to use it.  It's based on what their nannies are paid.

I do know that in DC itself and the immediate surrounding areas, most of my friends pay at least $15/hr unless you're willing to go with someone with minimal experience.

The IRS website has some great information on paying for taxes for your nanny.  Also, there are great payroll services like breadlove that can take care of all of that for you for a fee.

  • Bizarre.  Care.com says the average is $12.50/hr for two kids in my ZIP.  I guess we ARE the the burbs...
