C-sections

Is this possible 4 days after being released?

My son's first day of Kindergarten is 4 days after I will have been released from the hospital for my c/s.  My Dr. looked at me like I was crazy when I asked him if he thought I would be well enough to make it.  All he really said though was that I'm not driving to it.  My last c/s was over 5 years ago and the first couple of weeks is a blur.  Do you guys think 4 days out of the hospital will be enough for me to get out of the house and be there the morning of his first day at school?  I really do not want to miss it and will be really sad if I do.

And if anyone has kids already in school...how long did the first day take that morning?  Is it just showing up and taking them to their class/dropping them off, hugging and leaving?  I'm trying to figure out how much time I will be on my feet and moving around.

  • I assume someone else (SO?) will be going with you to drive and help out?  If so, I don't think it will be an issue.  I would've been fine to do that 4 days after coming home.

  • DS's father will be driving (awkward!!! LOL) and I'm trying to get DH to take the morning off to stay with the new LO.  I just don't want to rely too much on my ExH that day and am really hoping I'll be up to going.  If DH can't take that morning off I'm wondering if I'll be ok to just wear LO in my moby wrap.  I can't imagine we will be there that long.  It's not like I wouldn't be holding him at home and I know there are benches I could sit down if I need it.

  • As long as someone else is taking you and all you are doing is seeing him insideand going straight home, I don't see a problem with it.

  • If someone else is driving, then go. I was not up for our usual outings. I just wanted to stay home, but I would have gotten myself together for something like that. Make sure you have a place to sit and take it easy, but definitely be there!

  • I was discharged from the hospital 2 days after my DS was born (via scheduled c/s).  We went to Target on the way home from the hospital.  The next day (day 3), we went out to lunch at a local mexican restaurant so I could have a margarita.  I'm fairly sure we did something on day 4 as well.  I would think that as long as your DH can drive, you'll be fine to go walk your older son to his first day of kindergarten.

  • Thanks for the reassurance everyone!  My Dr. just looked at me like I was a crazy person when I mentioned it and he had me second guessing myself.

  • At our school, you drop off outside (or put them on a bus) and that's it. There's no walking your kid to K.

I would have been just fine 4 days PP, even AFTER my 3rd c-section.

  • It really depends on how your recovery is going. As long as you have someone helping you & driving you it should be ok.
  • I would have been fine to go out for a few hrs after 4 days at home.  However, DS was too small for the moby and I can imagine it would have hurt to tie around my waist.

Will you be BF'ing the new one? That would be my only concern that soon-not having milk pumped and/or introducing a bottle if you leave LO.

  • You should be able to take him but someone will have to drive you though. I know at my son's school, i took him that morning and I stayed about 30 min and that was that. You should be fine. just be careful and take it easy.

  • I also think it will be fine as long as someone else is driving.  I felt pretty functiomal at that point and my biggest issue was extreme swelling but hopefully you wont have that.

  • Every body and every delivery is different so you really can't know what to expect.  I could hardly walk a whole week after DD was born.  However, my dr told me before discharge I could drive as soon as I quit taking the pain meds.  Everyone seems to be concerned about driving but I could have driven better than I could have walked into my child's classroom.  Can you not reschedule the c/s for as few days later?

  • It might be difficult, but not impossible. I was at the pedi's office four days after both of my kids were born. I wasn't walking too well, but I made it. If I were you, I would go.

  • I personally think it'll be fine. My recovery was really quick & as long as it is just for the morning & you have someone else (SO/DH) to help you if needed then I don't see much of a problem with it.

Just do not over-stress yourself & make sure you take your pain meds beforehand in anticipation for how the extra activity might make you feel. I don't think I would be willing to miss it without at least trying anyways.

  • I had to go to Target on our way home from the hospital, I was five days post op from a c-section and emergency hystorectomy and I did fine.  I was super tired but I think as long as you take some pain medicine before you leave (and duh you're not driving) you will be fine.  :)  Enjoy the big milestone!
