Baby Names

too similar for siblings?

Our son is Owen.  If we have a boy, is Nolan too similar?  These were our two two when deciding the first time around.

Also, how do people feel about Liam?  Kenneth will definitely be the middle name after my H's father.

Maybe it will be a girl and this will all be out the window!

Re: too similar for siblings?

  • I like Liam better than Nolan, but I don't think Nolan and Owen are too similar to use if you like it the most.

  • Eh, not really There was a hockey player who was pretty well-known in the 90s named Owen Nolan, and I remember thinking that his name was pretty rhyme-y, but I don't think it's that bad. I do prefer Liam with Owen though, just because the endings are different and when yelled out from another part of the house it's easier to tell them apart. I like Liam Kenneth.

  • Thanks girls, I appreciate the input.
  • I love the name Nolan, but I do think it's too similar to Owen (you know the saying, "if you have to ask...").

Liam sounds much better, and definitely goes with Owen nicely.

  • Yes, sorry, definitely think Nolan and Owen are too similar and kind of a mouthful/tonguetwister together.

  • Owne Nolan to me is one person...  the hockey player.  But if you live in an area where hockey isn't big, I guess you could get away with this.

  • I think they are too close...its othe 'OW' 'OL' that makes it kind of a mouthful.

As far as Liam goes I Love the name! I've always thought it was so cute.

  • I get a little tongue tied when I say Owen and Nolan. Liam sounds great with Owen!
  • In my opinion, I'm not that partial to Nolan.  I think that between Nolan and Liam, I would definitely pick Liam.  As a pp wrote, OL and OW are pretty close and once they are older and you are calling for them, one may come when you mean the other ;) My pick is for Liam xo

    Good luck either way,

  • We were throwing around the name Nolan too.  I didn't think Owen and Nolan were too similar until I thought about little kids trying to pronounce "L" sounds.  Often they come out as "w" at first.  So, they might say "Nowan," which would definitely be confusing.

  • My neighbor has two boys named Owen and Nolan. I get a little tongue tied saying them, but I think they work. I prefer Nolan over Liam.
  • I prefer Liam over Nolan when paired with Owen.  My friend just had an Owen, her other son is Drew - I think that is a nice sibset as well.

  • We are trying to avoid an -on/-en/-an/-in ending for our boy name this time around and it's hard!!!!!  (DS is Mason)  Liam is on our list and I think it's really nice.  DH isn't sold.
