Gym daycare tips needed

I joined a gym last week and I need some tips to help DS get used to their childcare. The first time I left him he made it almost 10 minutes and dissolved into hiccuping sobbing. They paged me and I got him more calm, played a bit and left again. He lost it the second I left. I feel like such a jerk. Anyone have any tips? Do I give up for a few months until separation anxiety improves?

  • Aw, poor guy. Just keep trying. My kids go with no problem, but sometimes have their days. Can you bribe him with a special snack?

  • Just keep going.  It's a new surrounding with new people, some kids just take a while to get used to new places/people.  Don't expect to get a workout in this next week but if you keep going the surroundings and people will become familiar to him and then it won't be scary to him anymore.

    I agree with the others- just keep going.  Maybe just start by going for 30 mins and slowly increasing the time.  I know you won't get a good work out this way, but it might help him learn that you won't be gone for long.

    One thing that really helped with my DD was making sure she didn't see me leave. I waited until she is distracted with a toy and then ran out.  I don't have to do this anymore, but in the beginning it really helped.

    This is SO TRUE!!!  I remember with DD there were times that I looked more like a member of Special Ops getting out of the kid's room without her seeing me or noticing...  There are times and it's a pendulum where she would cry uncontrollably if I left and other times that she didn't even notice I was gone.  All in due time though.  One day you'll look back and think "Gosh I kinda miss her/him not even noticing I'm gone!"
