Pregnant after 35

Pap at first appt?

My regular doc was not going to do the pap at my annual exam since I had a positive test, but now instead we are going to the OBGyn and they say they will do it. I'll only be just 5 weeks then...

Anyone have experience with this? I'm afraid of disturbing my barely there babe.

Totally normal. I had a pap at the first appointment with both my pregnancies.

About 8 weeks both times. When I had the one with my first son the OBsaid, "don't worry. I'm miles away from the baby."

I was warned that I might spot a little and that that too was totally normal. I didn't spot either time.

  • I had one. With my husband in the room. AIEEEEEGHHHHHHRRRGGHHHHH.

  • Both babies both times here in the US. I delivered my first in the UK and they were surprised that they do that here.

  • They did one at my first appt also.  I think it is standard in the U.S. It can irritate the cervix and cause slight spotting but they will warn you of that.

My OB only does it if you haven't had one recently (within the past year). I was due for mine anyway, so she did it. I was about 7 or 8 weeks pg at the time.

Ditto, except it was only for my one pregnancy. AND my husband was in the room, but he decided to step out during the pap. HA! What's the difference now that he's about to experience ALLLLL the junk going on down there??

I had one at my first appointment, but they were doing so much other stuff down there (vaginal ultrasound) at the time it all just sort of blended together for me.  My poor husband got to hold my hand through it since we weren't expecting it, but he'd actually seen it before (surprise paps seem to be a reoccurring theme with me) so he just shrugged it off.  They warned me that there might be some spotting (I didn't have any) and a bit of discomfort after, but it wouldn't hurt the baby at all.

  • Yup, I had a pap at my first appointment in march, even though I had just had my annual in December.

  • Totally normal to my surprise too.  Had my annual in January and they did another one when they found out I was prego.
  • Completely normal... if your most recent pap was close to or more than 6mo ago. It won't disturb the babe, but since being pregnant increases the blood flow to that area, you'll be more likely to see a bit of pink spotting afterwards (which is also normal, even if you aren't pregnant)
