1st Trimester

If you've experienced bleeding...

What caused it? I had an "omg" moment last night and got sent to the ER because I was bleeding and cramping (I'm 12 weeks). Turned out that everything was fine, and the ER doctor said that one of the placentas (twins), while burrowing into my uterine wall, ate through a blood vessel. Unless I'm confused, I believe it's called a "subchorionic bleed".

Has anyone else experienced this or other bleeding/cramping incidents, and ended up being fine? I'm told bleeding isn't exactly uncommon, but I'm still a little rattled.

Re: If you've experienced bleeding...

  • I had a bit of a nasty bleed at around 6 weeks. My RE has the same theory - placenta "burrowing" into a blood vessel. I swore it was over - it was heavier than a period and had clots. But there was baby on the u/s, heart beating away the next day. I haven't had any problems since.

  • I had bright red bleeding in the middle of the night at 6.5 weeks.  After having two mc's last year I was sure this was another.  I prepared myself for the worst and went to the dr the next morning.  Low and behold... a heartbeat!  There was a bloodclot though that they said was probably the culprit for the blood.  I was told to take it easy for a week and the clot would take care of itself.  I am now 9 weeks along and have had no other bleeding.

  • 8 weeks, bleeding due to a very sensitive cervix. Dr told me to expect this to happen throughout pregnancy, but it's to making it any easier!
  • Yes, at five weeks.  Big bleed with smallish clots and thought for sure that we'd miscarried.  I just started week 12.  Of course I researched this like crazy and learned that first tri bleeding is pretty common for a pretty large variety of reasons, many unknown.
  • This happened twice during my first pregnancy.  Went to the ER the first time.  The second time I waited and got into my doctor the next morning.  To be honest I don't even remember what they said it was caused from.  I was too relieved that the heart was still beating to comprehend what the doctor was saying.  Needless to say, I know have a healthy 3 year old.  Good luck to you!  So glad to hear things are okay at this point!

  • I had some spotting (never enough to even hit my panties - only when I wiped) and it varried from brown/maroon/pink/a little bit of red...  It first started after intimacy. I called the Dr. the next day and they said its normal but I had my betas checked and they doubled. U/s a week later and there was a heart beat!

Bleeding lasted a day and a half - went away, came back for another day and a half then was gone for good. It might have come back because I was so frantically trying to see if it stopped I may have re-irritated my cervix haha...

I hate how statistics show higher likliness with bleeding but not all bleeding is the same so it is so hard to take that into consideration when you look at statistics vs. reality.
