Postpartum gallbladder problems?

I've been having this horrible issue where I get severe pain around my ribs in the evening and in the middle of the night from time to time. It wraps all the way from my ribs to my back and it's really no fun. I told my doctor about it at my PP visit and he initially proposed gallbladder issues but then dismissed the idea when I told him the pain usually responds to advil.

Well it seems to be responding less and less to advil, and I looked it up online and I think it is gallbladder issues. Apparently this is not uncommon after having a baby.

Is anyone else having these issues and what is your doctor having you do?

Re: Postpartum gallbladder problems?

  • sounds like gallbladder. Advil took away the pain for me too most of the time...im not sure if it was just when the gallbladder chose to relax on its own or the actual medicine. your pain should come after eating fatty foods(some say spicy too). I had my gallbladder out although i had problems while pregnant too so when i had problems after there was no argument it was coming out as soon as possible. They can check for stones by a simple ultrasound.

  • Once your gallbladder starts producing stones there is no way to stop it.  Meds and diet can help, but it will continue to produce stones until you have it removed.  I got mine out about 5yrs ago.  The surgery was very easy to recover from and necessary since I was having horrible pain regardless of what I ate.

  • I had to have my gallbladder out last month after I had my son.  Make your doctor do an ultrasound.  The longer you wait to get your gallbladder removed, the more complications you can have!  Not to mention, those attacks HURT! ouch

The surgery was laproscopy and I went home right after with some pain meds.  It hurts for a few days after, but isn't too scary or super painful.

  • I'm having the exact same pain. My doctor said it's very common in postpartum women and I'm having an ultrasound this week. In the meantime he told me to cut out fatty foods and to have Maalox or Mylanta each day.
