Pregnant after IF

anatomy scan question.....

Hi Everyone...

This is kind of a dumb question but were any of you told to have a full bladder for their anatomy scan? My friend just reminded me about this but my ob/gyn has never told me to come to an u/s with a full bladder. In fact, they usually have me give a urine sample beforehand.  The last time I was told to come with a full bladder was at ET.  I am not exactly sure what the reasoning behind the full bladder is but I know it was empty for the NT scan and they saw everything fine.  Our anatomy scan isn't until tomorrow afternoon so I can call in the morning I was just curious if anyone else was told this was important.

Thanks!

  • I didn't have a full bladder. Maybe I needed one but I didn't.

  • They actually had me empty my bladder before the ultrasound, but I was also getting a transvaginal ultrasound (cervical measurement), so that may have had something to do with it.

  • For my a/s, the tech asked me to have an empty bladder.  I was so glad b/c there was a lot of poking and pushing during the u/s. I think it would've been really uncomfortable with a full bladder.

  • i have never been told to have a full bladder for an anatomy scan. i was also not told full bladder for my NT scan, and in fact my bladder filled while i was waiting and i was told to empty it mid-ultrasound because it was taking up most of the room in there.

  • My MFM told me to drink 20oz of water an hour before the appt and not to use the restroom prior to my appt.  That is going to be VERY difficult for me!

Definitely call to see what they want. I think it depends on their equipment. My bladder was not full for my n/t, a/s or my growth scans, all through my MFM.

  • I physically cannot have a full bladder. With twins it is too painful. They have never told me to have one though. In fact I gave a urine sample before my 1st u/s. I think the newer machines are so much more sensitive that it is not necessary, but some techs are just so used to the old rules.

I didn't even need a full bladder before ET. They didn't want me to empty it, but they didn't want me to be uncomfortable.

And I am overweight so you would think an u/s would be more challenging, but it's not. They just push a little harder on all my fat. : )

I did not have to come with a full bladder.  That would have been rough.  Our A/S lasted over half hour.

  • For my first couple of u/s (6 and 7 weeks) I was told to have a full bladder, for my NT and a/s I was told to empty it right before I went in. I think it can help move the baby forward/up in the beginning, but as you get further along it can get in the way. Ultimately I don't think it matters a whole lot.

  • I was told to come to my NT scan with a full bladder. I would assume the same for the a/s. In terms of the urine sample, my OB gives us a take home cup and asks that it be FMU so it's not as if I'm "empty" by the time I get to the office (since this sample was given first thing in the morning). Do you not have a take-home cup?

Thanks again. I just called my Dr. and she said no I do not have to have a full bladder to which I replied, "Thank goodness"! It certainly has become difficult to hold it in and it feels pretty full with very little liquid so I was definitetly hoping the answer would be no. I'm sorry some of you had to!

Now if they could just make the next 4 hours go by faster that would be great!
