Tylenol before a shot?

Has anyone given their LO Tylenol an hour or so before getting their shot(s)?

My mom said she used to do this with us to help eliminate the chance of getting a fever or not feeling well after getting a shot.  I have no problem listening to my mom's advice, as she was/is an incredible mother, but I was just curious if anyone else heard of this or does it.

Thanks!

Re: Tylenol before a shot?

  • My mom did the same with us... But it is old school thinking. Most docs recommend against it. Our ped recommended giving it only after the shots and only if baby is fussy. Will it harm them? Probably not, but it is unnecessary.

  • Tylenol is a no-no for the 1st 2 or 3 months.

This is not true. But, OP, PP was correct in that you should not administer tylenol until after the shots, and only if LO needs it.

  • from canada here, and my doctor requested that I give my baby a dose of tylenol before her 2 month shots. She is a healthy baby with no health issues. Ask your doctor!
  • you might not need it before but be sure to have some handy.  My LO was in pain after his shots.  He just wanted to be held and whenever we tried to put him down he started the most heartbreaking cry.  I called the Dr. office and they said to give him some tylenol
  • My pedi had me give my LO a dose  half an hour before getting his 2 month shots, and then follow up with more doses if needed.

  • There is some belief that it reduces the effectiveness of the vaccines. I didn't give anything to P. he was fussy that evening but that was it.

  • I've been told to give it as needed afterwards.

With DS1, I only did if he was uncomfortable, fussy.

This is true according to my pedi.

Not to be a lurker, but are you sure your pedi wasn't talking about motrin? My pedi suggested tylenol after LO's first vaccine and gave me the conversion chart and everything.

  • We never have. It's not recommended since it can mask any reaction baby might have.
