Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Almost 11 months does not sit herself up

My DD will be 11 months on Aug, 7th. She does not crawl but she gets around all over the place sitting on her bottom with her legs in the splits position. If I put her on her knees she will put herself into a sitting position and then starts moving around that way. She cannot go from laying  to sitting on her own. She doesn't really pull up on things by herself either. I can stand her against the couch and she will go between the couch and the ottoman on her own. She does stand herself up in her baby pool but that is the only thing. Anyways, I guess what I am asking is should I be worried? Her Dr. wasn't worried at her 9months.

Oh, she does have acid reflux. We just quit giving medication and she seems to be doing a lot better!

Re: Almost 11 months does not sit herself up

  • Do you mean if she is lying down she can't get up at all?  She would be stuck?  Or do you mean she just can't pull herself straight up to a sitting position?

If she can't maneuver herself from lying down at all I would be calling early intervention to at least get an evaluation.

  • If she can't get up from a laying position in any way shape or form, I'd be asking the pedi.

However, if she can get up from laying in some way, I wouldn't worry about it at all. Going from laying to sitting is hard and takes a lot of core muscles. It's hard even for an adult. My 1 year olds strongest suit is her strength and ability to move and I'm pretty sure even she can't get up from a laying position directly to sitting yet.

ETA: the pulling up will come. My LO was close to walking before she could pull up effectively, but otherwise moved around just fine.

  •  She never gets on her knees. If I put her on her knees to encourage her to crawl she will just put herself in a sitting position and scoot around on her butt. That is the ONLY time she can get herself in a sitting position. If she is on her stomach she will push herself up with her arms and she will sometimes go backwards but NEVER forward. She just cries and then starts spitting up, She gets around from point A to point B but that is with scooting while sitting.
  • I would talk to your pedi.

  • I still wouldn't be too worried. Some kids never crawl and find a "weird" way of moving. If she has the strength to do all of what you describe, I'd say she's just fine, but ask your pedi if you're still concerned.
  • We didn't have independent sitting up until crawling.

  • Our LO was 11 months on July 17th and it was right around then that he started getting himself to a sitting position, I was worried because he wasn't pulling himself up or crawling and so I called EI and they come out tomorrow (AHH!) anyway, two weeks after I called and right before he turned 11 months he started army crawling, sitting himself up from lying down, pulling himself up and just this weekend started taking small steps while holding onto the couch. He's still working on all of it and is still learning how to pull himself up on things but I feel so much better now as I worried over all of this alot. Do what your gut tells you but know that I myself am slowly realizing that all babies develop differently and while EI is coming out I know regardless of what they tell us, I will feel so much better knowing.

  • Thank you for sharing your experience. This morning I put her on her stomach and she actually started to scoot forward and get up on one knee.  I went ahead and called her doctor today and he said that she is delayed with reason. That reason being acid reflux. He said not to worry and that all babies develop at their own pace. He also said crawling usually comes within 4 weeks of  getting on one knee and that if she is not crawling at least a little in 4 weeks to bring her in and that he will refer us to PT. He said that he doesn't think PT is necessary bc she is doing all the pre-crawling things and there isn't much for them to work with her on. This made me feel so much better!
