Lurker with a WWYD question

Hello! I mostly lurk on this board but have a situation and I'm hoping you ladies can give me some sound advice.

I have a 20 month old daughter and am currently pregnant with my second child. I have a full time job that I HATE and am not planning on coming back to work. I will probably find a part time job next summer.

The problem is that one of my CW is going on maternity leave October 1 and isn't coming back until the middle of January. I would like to only work through the end of November but I feel guilty about leaving them in a bad spot while someone else is on maternity leave (I work for a very small family-owned law firm).

Everyone does know I'm leaving but they are assuming that I am working right up until I have my baby or at least until January when my CW comes back from her leave. I really don't want to stay that long.

My boss wants to put off even looking for my replacement until the end of September even though I told her that I thought I should start training my replacement in October.

I know my DH would prefer I work through the end of the year so that we have some more money saved up, I just don't know if I can do it.

How would you handle this situation?

  • I understand that you hate your job, but I'd suck it up and work until the end of the year since your H also thinks it's in your combined best interests to have money saved up.  You can do it, you don't WANT to do it.

  • Yeah, I think that's going to be the plan. I know I CAN do it. I just REALLY dislike my job. It's hard to motivate myself to come in everyday.

  • Just remember at least you have a deadline for when it will end.  Next job you do have should be much better!

  • My advice is do whatever you want and is best for your family.  You shouldn't feel compelled to accommodate your employer.  Just tell them now and give them plenty of notice.  It's just business.
  • Maybe as a motivation you can set your income aside for a "fun" or "trip" fund - something that you would normally be hard pressed to afford. Or reward yourself - for every week that you work - a pedi one week, a house-cleaner another week.

Knowing that once the baby was here I was done working would help push me to just work up until at least the end of the year. Can't hurt to bank a little more money for your family.

I would work up until I have the baby. Not for them but to save as much money as possible.

  • I would work till the end and realize I WILL NEVER HAVE TO DO THIS AGAIN. I would save as much as I could since I know we would be down to one income.
  • Thanks for the input, ladies! I talked to my boss yesterday and told her that my last day will be January 11. That gives us some extra cash in the bank, gives her enough time to find my replacement and allow me to train him/her, AND it still gives me a month before the new baby comes to get the house ready and spend time with my daughter. The best of all worlds!

  • I would work until the end of the year just because your husband is concerned about finances, but if you could otherwise solve that concern, I'd give the firm ample notice that you are leaving when you want. I'm a solo lawyer and have been left in a lurch by people abruptly leaving, but I also totally understand HATING your job. It's your employer's issue to find the replacement. If you give them notice, then you've done your part responsibly!
